    lowering divx resolution

i'm not sure if i'm posting this in the right section, but hopefully someone can help me.

i have a bunch of divx and xvid movies that i ripped from DVDs in my collection. those are all around 700MB with 640x272 resolution. i want to lower the resolution and size of those movies to under 256MB with 320x240 resolution so i can view them on my pocket pc.

i am able to rip my DVDs again and directly make the lower resolution movie files, but DVD ripping takes forever on my computer so if there is a simple way to just lower the resolution and file size of my existing divx files, that would be very useful.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

you can do this in Virtual Dub
    load your file
under audio choose "direct stream copy"
under video you have to choose "full processing mode"
    under video open filters
    click add
    highlight the "resize filter"
    put in your new resolution
    under video choose compression
choose your encoder ie. divx, xvid
    click on configure
choose the settings you want ie. bitrate will determine size of outputted file
when done with settings click on file, save as avi
this will save you the time of ripping your dvd but at the cost of re-encoding in Vdub
use a bitrate calculator to determine your final size
i would cut out 1-2 min of your file and experiment to see what settins are acceptable ie bitrate for your finished file
this will save you the time of working with the whole video
when you find the settings that are acceptable do your whole file
