can i use virtualdub to fix a divx a/v synch problem?

i have made some VCD's before and when i had problems with synch i used virtual dub and took the audio part from the divx file and then used that as the audio source in TMPGenc but i have a dvd-rip i converted to divx and the sound comes a bit before the video. can virtual dub fix this? what do i do? is it able to shift it or something? also when i play it in windows media player, either the old 6.4 one or the new flashy 9 series if i move the slider to a random part in the movie the sound goes WAY off, by like a few seconds. fyi, i used a prog called simple divx to encode this, if that helps.

BTW, the last movie i encoded, turned out really nice in terms of quality and stuff, it was phone booth and i believe that movie is of average length, and i used Dr. Divx. this is terminator 2 which is like 2 and a half hours, in simple divx you can set the file size or bitrate, i did filesize. i set it to 1GB because at 700 mb for a cd, the quality description said very bad. and even at 1GB it isnt that great. phone booth was like the DVD, though again that was only 1.5 hrs. but do you think maybe i should use a better encoder? id use dr divx but its only a friggin trial and with simple divx many times ill set the file size and it will end up far from that size, by like 200 mb. although this time it was only by like 15 mb. and i have tried MPEG mediator too and that was what i did the movie fnf i got for b'day as a test and it came out good but it didnt like phone booth and cut off like 1/3 of the movie.

so i need a better encoder, but one thats easy to use. so if anyone can help me with that id be most grateful.

    thanks!!!

"but i have a dvd-rip i converted to divx and the sound comes a bit before the video. can virtual dub fix this?"

    A) If the difference between audio and video is constant throughout the video:

Load the file into VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod, or NanDub.
Set BOTH "Video"(VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod and NanDub) and "Audio" (VirtualDub and NanDub - VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list") to "Direct Stream Copy".
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Interleaving" (For VirtualDubMOD, rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Interleaving")
Under "Audio skew correction", set an appropriate number of milleseconds (positive or negative) in the box labelled "Delay audio track by"
    Save with a new filename

    B) If the difference increases as the movie plays:

From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Framerate" - and select "Change so video and audio durations match"

    Let us know of your success ;>}

ok forget virtualdub i have tried a couple times and sometimes the progress bar reaches the end and the clock keeps ticking and the log says some stupid "possible livelock" BS. id like to get my other question answered--a good converter. because it must be simple divx. if that thing was better the sound wouldnt be out of sync. and with the output file i got out of virtualdub the one time it actually worked, it did what i told it to do, which was the second thing u said:

From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Framerate" - and select "Change so video and audio durations match"

but the sound was still too early and i moved the slider in win media player and did it a couple times to different parts in the movie and it that made the sound like 5 seconds after the video! ARGGGGHHH! i think theres errors in the vid or something, because media player treats all my other divx movies (including ones i myself converted) just fine.

alright well since noone wants to help me i had to take it uponj myself to find a converter. i used the DVX thing, but that stinks too. i got the latest one 353a8, and the .net thing and everything i need and i have divx 503. it works great up until after the DOS window that is besweet it goes to virualdubmod and i bring up the status box and that must be the first pass i guess and then it goes away and flashes the window and i have to bring it up again so that must be the 2nd pass, so a little into that i get an error message of like "incorrect or corrupt file, encountered an error or something and it aborts and at the bottom in the taskbar theres a windows yellow curvy box thats big (win xp) that says "virtual mem low, using page file, requests will be denied etc) so wtf is this stupid thing eating my memory up? i have 512!!!!!!! do i like need a gig or something? more? thats pretty stupid. this has happened twice after like 2 hours waiting for it to process. which is ok but not if its gonna crash on me! im guessing one or more things i have is a beta or something and is full of bugs?

will SOMEONE PLEASE assist me with this? are you all intentionally not helping me as an incentive to make me look for stuff on my own? i KNOW there are stickies about like this dvx and other software, but i havent used them because they are complicated and i wanted something easy to use, few clicks, good result like dr. divx. i didnt know this dvx wasnt really that hard to use but geez maybe TELL me that huh? instead of just leaving me to have to find out for myself. i thought this was a help forum.

                  wow.

do as setarip said............load the file into virtualdubmod, under file click open video and say no to the pop up about the header............then select direct stream copy from video and from streams select streams list and right click and select direct stream copy, then under video click on frame rate and checkmark change so video and audio durations match........then under file click save as and run it.........let us know how the file turns out!!!

i told you i tried that and it didnt work. the one time it did work nothing changed and most other times it froze and when i clicked on the "log" tab of the little status window it said "no cycle in ten seconds, possible livelock" whatever that means. so i deleted the avi it created. im not doing that anymore. i need a good converter. when ive done things with dr. divx they came out perfect. i wish that wasnt a 15 day trial or i could find some way around that thing.

anyway im sure this DVX thing is good, but i need help getting it working first
