    Virtual Dub Capture Problems

I'm having some difficulty with dropped frames using Virtual Dub (and any other capture program). Here's the deal. I can capture fine using CD Quality audio compression, 320x240, and div-x low motion capture. However, if I try to use 640x480 video compression, or use mpeg layer 3 audio compression, the end result is a ton of dropped frames (Seriously, like 80 per minute). Does anybody know what this may be caused by? I am capturing from a VHS tape. The specs of my computer are:

    AMD T-Bird 1.2 GHZ processor
    256mb DDR memory
30 GB HD (24 GB of free space)
ATI All in Wonder 32 MB DDR Video Card
    Windows XP
Hard Drive is set to DMA

I wouldn't think my computer had insufficient memory or speed, so I'm assuming that either Virtual Dub doesn't like Windows XP or I am doing something wrong with settings.

Thanks for any help anyone might have!

Your computer is too slow. For 640x480x24fps (DivX-Low) plus MP3-sound you would need more than 2 GHz. DivX-Low isn't designed for realtime-capturing. Maybe it works with a faster codec like DivX-fast, Indeo or MJPEG. You also better capture the sound in raw PCM, it's faster and gives better sync.

It's been my experience, that when capturing from tape, the closer to uncompressed audio and video you can get, the higher quality the end result - meaning doing the compressing AFTER the capture. As an example, one of my machines is an Athlon 800Mhz, with 512Mgs of memory, running Windows 98. Using ASUS Live! for capturing, I am readily able to capture video (with NO dropped frames) at 704x480 (using the included ASUS2 codec) and Uncompressed PCM 16 bit sound at 48,000.

I can then alter, compress, and manipulate this file to my heart's content in VDub and/or TMPGEnc...

I take it u have an asus motherboard? Or do asus also make capture cards?

Where can I get the asus codecs? I have a LEX motherboard and hauppauge WinTV GO PCI card. I just wanna try different methods of capturing.

If u capture direct to DIVX fast motion 6000bitrate then yes, the quality is nearly like DVD! I have done so (direct from TV, not VCR)
