    Cutting problem with Virtual Dub

Hi, I have a problem cutting about 5 mins off the beginning of a film (its only an interlude) because the file is 712mb. So what I'm doing is cutting it off in VDub which I have done lots of times but when I then play the file the sample rate seems to have changed even though I selected direct stream copy. I've used AVInfo to see what the audio stream is but it says "8192 - Unknown Wave Format" and has a samp rate of 48000. Any help would be great, thx

Which version of VDub are you using?

Load the original file into VDub.
Under the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information". Make note of the "audio" information.
Do your cutting. Make certain of two things: cut on a keyframe and set both "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying".

    Close and reopen VDUB.
    Load your cut version.
Select "File Information" and compare to the original.

If there is a difference, try anew by loading your original (uncut file) into VDub, make the starting point for cutting about two or three keyframes into the film (rather than the absolute beginning) and set your end frame for cutting on another keyframe. Select "Delete frames". save your file under a new name.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

      Doing my head in

Thx for your help setarip, but tried and nothing works

      I'm using VDub 1.4c

I tried to re-encode the audio but keep getting an error "ACM failed to suggest audio compression format"

oh yeah, the file info says for compression - unknown (tag 2000)

does this mean anything to you?

        "unknown (tag 2000)"

This is almost certainly indicative of an AC3 audiostream.
You can deal with this file with either VirtualDub1.4c-AC3 or Nandub.

I just got extremely curious about something that slipped by me originally. You indicated that you were able to load and cut the video using the "plain vanilla" VirtualDub v.1.4c. I continue to use v.1.4d.

Until now, I'd presumed that these versions of VDub would totally reject an AVI with .AC3 audio, out-of-hand. So I just (2 minutes before I started to type this) started VDub v.1.4d and loaded an AVI with a .AC3 soundstream. I set both "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct stream copying", set my start point to the keyframe nearest 5 minutes and set my end point to the end of the video. I then saved the shortened video and, much to my surprise, it plays perfectly!

Perhaps an AC3-related bug was fixed since v.1.4c. Therefore, you might want to download VDub v.1.4d or more recent and try again...

P.S. Sorry to have gone off on a tangent about Nandub and VDUB1.4c-AC3
