The aspect ratio you want to set is 4:3, now, it doesn't matter if it's a 16:9 ratio encode, if your divx player has the option of choosing 4:3 then just choose that option.
If your player doesn't have the option of choosing an aspect ratio, then encode from 16:9 orignal - 4:3. I'm pretty sure it will have an option though, otherwise throw it in the bin

What I do is, I connect an A/V wireless transmitter to the tv/out of my PC and setup 3 receivers to 3 tv's in the house. I then encode my movies in 16:9 and then play it in divx player, that player has an option to go 4:3, I simply click it and it's tv aspect on all 3 tv's...
What's better than letting the whole house watch what you watch from the one source and they're all in the comforts of their own beds or lounge
And there's no burning, no wasting time, no spending money on cd-rs or dvd-rs for the rest of your life, unless for backup....and you don't need to go buy a standalone dvd player..
And even if you did buy one, you can only watch the movie you burnt on that one tv that the dvd player is hooked up to. If you want others to watch it at the same time, they have to go to where you're watching it, which in my case, I don't like, since you always get interrupted, by a laugh or a chat wth your family.
So what better than to kick them into their own rooms while you watch in peace an quiet?...and not only can we watch the same movie, but, we can all watch different movies streaming from the same computer, all perfectly smooth...a 4th movie gets a bit choppy, 2 movies is perfect, and 3 would be a rare case, and I've never needed to play 4 movies @ once, since we only have 3 tv's
And I doubt that any family member is going to pass up the opportunity to watch a blockbuster that no one has seen yet, if you get my picture..
