    HELP with encoding avi

hi every1 im new 2 this forum but i know a little about divx, ect.

anyway, i first tried to encode a .avi movie into .rm realmedia. i tried many different software but they all either tell me that the 'format is unsupported' or they only encode the audio and then crash.
i then tried encoding with smartmovie into smaller avi. the same thing happens-it just encodes the audio and crashes. i know this because when i play the output file in powerdvd the audio plays with no picture.
i have all the right divx codecs so what is the problem with my movie? please help. thanks!

Load your file in Avicodec (my favorite) or GSpot and see what the video info is.

The video requires an XviD (NOT DivX) codec. You may also want to install the FFDShow filter...
