    Sound problems with AVI

I am using Rippack latest (beta) version to compress DVD's. They play fine on my Win2k PC but the sound is lost when i play them on my home DivX/DVD player (ORMOND brand -Vestel Co) . I have already updated the firmware (supposed to be compatible with DivX 4/5) from the constructor's site but that does not change anything.
Besides, when I download AVI movies from PtoP sites (e.g. www.divxovore.com), those ones have no sound issue on the player !
So : why is it so and what specific parameters should I select in Rippack (like for instance DivX 3.11 instead of DivX4 or 5 or AC3 sound instead of DivX sound, etc) different from the default ones ?
Thanks in advance for any help on this....

Load your AVI file into the latest version of "VirtualDubMod" or "NanDub". Go to "File" > "File Information" and post everything that is listed in both the video and audio sections of the dialog box.

VirtualDubMod is a very comprehensive conversion and analysis tool ... if only I had the time to study it in depth!
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

          thanks for your explanations...
So my undertsanding is you convert the AVI file you have just created with this tool and it should be OK for my DVD/DivX living room player.
In the meantime I was reading about Nandub (http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nandub.html) where it says it is more up to date than VirtualDub ...Your opinion welcome...

I cannot comment I'm afraid but beware, VirtualDubMod is a different and more comprehensive application to VirtualDub.

As I said, if I only had the time

It seems to be more "Flexible" with audio, but essentially it is a (legally) modified version of the regular Virtual Dub.

                hello,
I have checked the audio info on my DivX AVI files. The ones that are mute on my home player have DivX type of sound (it says audio tag unknown or not decodable). The ones which can be read are files I downloaded and have mp3 type of sound (several versions exist depending on how the file was compressed.
Note : I have extracted the audio track into a Wav file and tried to convert it into mp3 with MusicMatch mp3 burner but it says the Wav file cannot be converted.
Question : with NanDub or VirtualDub, is there a way to convert the original audio stream into mp3 for instance ?
Question : is there a way to convert the original audio stream into mp3 with NanDub or VirtualDub directly for instance ?

VirtualDubMod is a very powerful converter. However, it doesn't come with a complete set of codecs.
What are you aiming to do, play your DivX on your PC? FDDShow should do this.
If you're trying to rewrite your files for standalone DVD compatibility I don't think you neccessarily need MP3.
To see what codecs are needed download G Spot and run a file in it looking and posting here what 'File Information' reveals?

On my PC everything works fine, using Rippack to create DivX AVI. on my standalone DivX/DVD player, the video works fine but most of the DivX I have created myself lose their sound (though I have installed the latest firmware). On the other hand, the AVI movies i download from the web do not lose their sound (as explained in my previous msg)
I was not able to see where in VirtualDubMod there the audio menu and conversion command are located (there is one audio menu in NanDub but not sure I know how to use it).
Now, if mp3 is not mandatory for a standalone player but if the DivX sound does not work, what do I need to convert the audio track into from an existing AVI movie ? And what audio option should I choose when I create the DivX ?

I've no practical experience of DivX I'm afraid and am not even sure if you can simply transcode or whether you need to demux.

The sound ooptions in VirtualDubMod are accessible throught the Streams/Streamlist menu. Right clicking on the soundtrack and switching to Full Processing Mode will enable the other options in that menu.

"I was not able to see where in VirtualDubMod there the audio menu and conversion command are located"

Go to "Streams" > "Streams List" Right-click at the top of the dialog on the audio stream where it says: “Desc:”-this is where the audio stream is listed-and select "Full Processing Mode" then you will see a selection in the dropdown list called "Compression". From there, you can choose your audio compression.

A quote from your 4th post:

"is there a way to convert the original audio stream into mp3 with NanDub or VirtualDub directly for instance"

You can do Mp3, as was stated by your question, you indicated that this was your intention.
