Getting no loss in quality when converting from mpg to Divx?

Hi all,

I have this 400 meg mpg file that i want to convert to divx because it is taking too much space than i would like it to. I do not want it a certain file size, but the lowest possbile size that will show no loss in quality. So in other words, i need to find the best bitrate for that video. The only way i know how to solve this problem is by trial-and-error, and that is getting very tiresome. Any suggestions?

You don't say if your mpeg is mpeg1 or 2. For lower resolutions you can use a lower bitrate (bitrate determines the file size). For full dvd (720x480) I've gotten good results using 2 pass with 1000k bitrate.

Simply use a bitrate calculator to determine the appropriate bitrate.

the file is mpeg1, and i do not think i made my problem clear... i am looking for a way to encode this file to divx, at the lowest bitrate possible, without degrading in quality. For example, if i encode the file at 1000kbit/s, it will look no different if i encode it at 2000kbit/s, becasue the file is not dvd quality. what i need is the lowest possible divx bitrate that will give no visible degradation in quality. sorry if my other post was not clear.

Try using DivX v.3.11alpha at 910Kbps...

how did you come up with that number? you would need the mpg file to find the best bitrate.
this would be a lot easier if gordian knot could encode mpg1 files, as it has the bit/pixel function.

Re-encoding without quality loss is impossible !!!


But MPEG1 -vs- DivX5...

IMHO a compression gain between 25-30 % should give decent quality !!!

So compressing it to 300MB should be ok...

thanks for all your help guys... i compressed it to 300 meg and ti looked even better! (noise filter)
