    Trying to understand this process

    Hello All,
I am new to these processes, and seems I can use some help.
Ok, I have downloaded a movie from the Internet to my HDD. The file has an AVI extension. I Have TMPGEnc also installed. The prblem seems to start when trying to Encode this file to Mpeg etc. I am in the wizard, however, I receive a message (sorry did not write it down), that an error occured, and to the fact that something was unsupported. Also, when using GSPOT, it tells me that XVID 4CC is what it needs, but it does detect the Audio AC3.
However, the movie does play in Realplayer, with no sound. In any case, when the encoding to MPEG is being done, must the Video and Audio Codec's be installed?? Or, is it just this file cannot be converted to MPEG than Burned to a DVD??

    Thanks very much

Assuming its not illegally downloaded material...

Yes, you have to install a decoder for XviD and AC3 to feed TMPGEnc with it !!!

      Hi Soulhunter,

Ok, Yes, I have loaded a Video Codec, ,and here is the interesting thing, even thought Gspot states that I already have an AC-3 Decoder installed, which I assume from the XP install, I still installed another one from free codec.com However, I cannot tell which one is taking presedence. Anyhow, I seemed to have created an MPEG file from Tmpgenc, but Tmpgenc DVD Author, will not burn it. Also, playing this new created file in WMP or Real player, I get video but know sound, I am just trying to make sure the processes I am taking, are correct.
One other item, after Tmpgenc has done the conversion to MPEG, am I to correct that I then do the burning?? And, I see other forum references to 2 files, Video_ts and Audio_TS i do not see these anywere.
Thanks for you time and help.

Make sure you have defined a audio source...

And make sure you use video+audio processing...

You could also try to demux the AC3 with a tool like VDubMod...

        - Then encode the only the video with TMPGEnc

        - Finally load both files seperatly into the DVD Author

Hi, ok, I have progressed here, i did get a Video and Audio_ts files created, however, the Audio file is empty. During the process as you mentioned above, I did select Audio and Video.

            Hello Soulhunter,

Ok, I guess I am somewhat still confusd. I did install a decoder called AC3FILTER, which I now get sound when playing the AVI file via WMP.
However, am I suppose to use AC3FILTER on the avi file or the converted MPEG file to decode the audio???
Because right now, I just keep getting a valid Video_TS file, and the Audio_ts file is always empty. I believe I am missing a step here.

            Thanks

With VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS you mean the folders that you get when creating a DVD ???

Dont care, usually the AUDIO_TS folder always empty !!!

Btw, when you create a DVD from a AVI (with AC3) you dont need to convert* the audio...

              * Convert means: Decode the AC3 -> Re-encode to MPEG-Audio

The AC3 in the AVI is already DVD compliant !!!

So, the best way would be to demux the AC3 with Virtual Dub Mod and feed it directly to TMPGEnc DVD Author...

You need only to convert the video (XviD) to DVD compliant MPEG2 then !!!

              Bye

                Ok Thank You.
Basically what I am trying now, before reading your update here, is to tell Tmpgenc to create seperate files for Audio and video, then input these to DVD Auth.
                Should this work as well?

Dont think TMPGEnc is able to output two separate files...

But Im not 100% sure !!!

The main advantage in the "demux" procedure is that you dont have to re-encode...

Re-encoding does always include quality loss !!!

In your case, it does also mean channel loss (5.1 -> 2.0)

Means, a "lower quality" stereo stream, instead of a 6 channel "better quality" AC3 one...

So, I would recommend to demux the AC3 from the AVI to feed DVD Author !!!

Is my version of TMPGEnc (v.2.57) outdated ???

                        Hi All,
Yes, TMPGEnc is in the process of creating 2 seperate files.
I am also going to install the Dob Mod.
                        Thanks All

                          Hello SoulHunter,

I have a question per your entry about usingVirtual Dub Mod.
Since I already have an AVI converted file to Mpeg2, I then take the output from Dub Mod, then input both seperatly to DVD AUTH?
It also looks like I need a utility called Besliced!!!

Ok, so is the point here to merge both files in to one which then goes to the Burner. Because, I keep getting a Burned CD with just video and no sound. It seems that when DVD Auth is doing the burning, it uses only 1 input file. Also, can you expalin to me, what the role of the AC3Filter decoder is? I have this installed as a Codec?
By the way, I am using DVD+R media
                          Thank You Again,
                          Alski

                            Made everything right ???

Open the AVI with VDubMod and select streams...

                            Select stream list...

Select the AC3 and click on demux...

                            Now you have two files...

Feed the AVI file into TMPGEnc to get a MPEG2 file...

Now you should have three files...

Feed TMPGEnc DVD Author with the MPEG2 file...

When it shows you a message (audio is missing) select the AC3 file !!!

Now start its process to create the DVD content...

                            Bye

                              Hello SoulHunter,

First, thanks very much for producing all the graphix, I really appreciate this. It does help in the process. I will give all this a whirl..
Also, my Video selections that I have in Tmpgenc, are System-video and ES-video, apparently I must be using a different version than you, Does it matter which I use??
                              Thank You
