Filesize is a few ko after encoding :(

    Hello,

when I try encoding a movie into xvid (or into divx), the result is a file of something like 20ko... (well it shouldnt, should be more around 300 Mo...)

I got xvid and divx codec reinstalled (I think :/) but am not too sure of what I should do :/

I believe the answer to be somewhere on the forums but I don't really know what my problem is so it's hard to do a search

    Thanks anyway

Well I'm encoding in xvid : 2pass - 1stpass (other options by at their default states)

I've been told that the 2pass-1stpass is indeed supposed to give this 20k file, and that you must next "reencode" your movie in 2pass-2ndpass.

But how do you do that exactly ?

2 pass means you have to encode 2 times !!!

        Like...

        - Load the source with a program like VDub

        - Config XviD's 2 pass/1st pass....

        - After its done, load the source again (VDub etc.)

        - Config XviD's 2 pass/2nd pass....

Note: You have to use the same settings for 1st & 2nd pass !!!

Hint: Read some guides about 2pass encoding...

I wish I had a guide for 2 pass encoding I searched for one but...

Would you have a link to one ?

          Anyway, here's what I've done :

          1. I Open my uncompressed avi file in Virtual Dub

          2. I select Video --> Compression and choose Xvid. In configure, I select 2pass-1stpass

          3. I "save as avi" and put that, say, on my desktop, with the name "test.avi"

          4. Then, I go to Video --> Compression and change 2pass-1stpass into 2pass-2ndpass(ext) (tried with int but got the same result)

          5. I do "save as avi" and put, still on my desktop, the file I name "final.avi"
[edit] I have the same result saving it "test.avi" (overwriting the previous file) [/edit]

          6. Virtual Dub tells me "Video Compression Error : An Unknown Error occured (may be corrupt data) (error code -100)."

So what am I doing wrong ?

          Thanks

here is an excellent guide to convert from dvd to xvid (but can also be used for other formats to xvid): http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/...rdianknot.html

and this guide explains all the codec options in xvid, including 1st pass and 2nd pass: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html

            good luck
