Which method/codec produces the best results?

Which is the best method and codec for getting the best quality Mpeg-4 Video on one CD? I have always used Flask with DivX 3.11 and sometimes 4.12. I have tried XviD and results were similar to DivX. Also, which is the best compressed audio codec to use?

DivX3.11 or M$MPEG4 V2 and nandub(two pass) gives the best quality, but the difference between this two codecs and DivX4.11/4.12 is not very big. For best quality with smallest filesize you really need a lot of experince about the best bitrate/resolution/filters.

What about XviD? Is it another M$ MP4 Hack like DivX 3.11 and Angelpotion, or a totally new codec?
