i guess i need a codec

hey, i have this video file i donwloaded from Kazaa and i really have no idea what to do with it. it says DIVX in the file name but it is a '.avi'. im not sure if thats good or bad, but anyway, i try to play the file in kazaa, windows media player, and quicktime, and in each, there is no sound or video, only the video duration bar moving across, with a black screen. it does this in all 3 of them. I took a random shot by downloading DivX codec alpha 3.11, and i thought maybe it would work, but it doesn't change anything and i dont even know how to use a codec. i would really appreciate any help that anyone can give, thx.

divx content isnt played well in kazaa or morpheus
u installed 3.11 alpha this is ok
maybe that video is new divx 4.12 (www.divx.com should have a link for download the bundle with their playa)
when asked to play divx 3 content too with divx 4 say no

then it should work
else install the nimo codec package

i just told someone else this. ur gonna have to face it. most movies on p2p networks are fake. the best place is newsgroups/usenet. I use forte agent as my client. give it a whirl.

ur probably right about the file being fake, but i just want to see if maybe it really does have any footage. so i got both the DivX 3.11 and the DivX 4.12, i said no when it asked me about playing the 3.x stuff with the 4.x, but the quicktime screen is still blank. do i have to do something after i install it, because the only applications i found in 3.11 were register_DivX.exe and SetStereo.exe, and after i ran the first of those i had no idea what to do. do i need to do anything else or will the codec work by itself after installation? also, if neither of those work, do u know a good site for the nimo codec?

All this effort for one movie? Run out to your local video store and rent it. If you like it enough, rip it and copy it. About 3.11, all you have to do is run register_DivX.exe and there you go. the nimo codec (pack, i think) is available at divx-digests software section. Good Luck.

ya ur right ive already given up on it, the 700 MB file was killing my computer, so thanx anyway, but im done with it.
