Can't get Audio and video to sync up.... AGAIN

hey guys, I'm compressing some AVI's so they'd play back on my PDA and save some some space. The problem I'm running in to is that i can't get the audio and video to sync up! I'm sure you've all heard this stoory before, but I'm kinda new at this..

I'm using virtualdub.. basically for two purposes... converting AVI's to smaller sizes and converting ripped DVD's to smaller sizes.

    1) AVI's - For converting AVI's I changed the video size to 320x240 (or 320x180 depending on aspect ratio) to view on my PDA. Under Frame rate the only change i made was to process every other frame under frame rate conversion. Video is in full processing mode using the Divx 5.1.1 codec. Audio is also in full processing mode but I'm trying to convert it to MP3 using the LAME 3.96.1 codec. This is most likely where i made a wrong turn... most of the stuff i have is encoded in VBR and the only options i get with this codec seem to be ABR and CBR

    2) for DVD's most things are the same as in AVI's (I'd have the DVD video saved in AVI format and Audio saved seperately in uncompressed WAV). I just change the audio from "direct stream" to WAV in virtualdub..... STILL have the damn VBR audio out of sync problem!!!

Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

    Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub or VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
    1) Load your original .AVI into NanDub

2)Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

    3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode" (NanDub only -For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Full Processing Mode")
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)" (NanDub only - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)")

    4) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (In VirtualDubMOD, "Save WAV" is located under the "Streams" drodpown menu) (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"

    5) Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (NanDub - set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file. - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>click on the listed audiostream and then select "Disable").

Then close NanDub and restart it
Set "Audio" to "No audio" (Not necessary under VirtualDubMOD)
    Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV (In VirtualDubMOD, Streams>>Add)
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode" (In VirtualDubMOD, Streams>>Rightclick on the listed audiostream, click on "Direct Stream Copy")
From the "Audio" (In VirtualDubMOD, "Streams") dropdown menu, select "Compression" (In VirtualDubMOD, rightclick on the listed audiostream, click on "Compression") and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" (In VirtualDubMOD, "Save as") and save your file with a new filename.

I think it's all my audio/video settings... since I'm going from an uncompressed WAV. I have my Divx codec (5.1.1... just got 5.2 so need to play with that a bit) set at 1-pass and 300 max bitrate (this is for compression and viewing on a small screen, not beuty on a monitor). I have the LAME ACM codec installed but I can't find the setting to change it to VBR... the only options i get are CBR and ABR...

Plus I have no idea how to set the bitrate on the MP3 audio yet ...

First, regarding your .AVIs, you said, "most of the stuff i have is encoded in VBR"

Now you are saying, "since I'm going from an uncompressed WAV"

          Which is it??????????????????

The AVi's i already have and am just compressing are encoded in VBR but the sound files from my ripped DVD's are saved in WAV.... neither of the two sync up.
When compressing the VBR AVI's I get a warning trough virtualdub that audio might skew a bit since it is VBR, But with ripped DVD's, the video is saved in VBR and audio is uncompressed WAV, so when i save the movies, vid stays VBR but the WAVs get changed to CBR.... That's my problem... I need to learn how to set up VBR MP3 and what max bitrate and kbs I should save them at for it all to sync.

any ideas?? I have no idea how to set up VBR mp3 with the LAME codec (or any other one for that matter) Is there a way to maybe de-VBR the video>?

"Is there a way to maybe de-VBR the video>?"

The "VBR" in .AVIs refers to the AUDIOstream, NOT the VIDEOstream.

                Re-read my first response...
