I'm having some trouble with .avi files (jerky DVD Playback)

Specifically HDTV .avi files that I've downloaded. Here's what I've done.

    1. Opened the files in GSPOT, taken a note of the stats.

    2. Opened the file in VirtualDubMod, streamed the audio to a .wav file.

    3. Using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5, I'm encoding the .avi and .wav file into DVD compliant .m2v and .mp2 files. I'm using the following settings:

    720 x 480
    16:9 Display
    23.976 (internally 29.97 fps)
    CBR rate control
    8000 bitrate
    224 buffer
    video format NTSC
Encode mode 3:2 pulldown when playback
    4:2:0
    9 bits

    4. Using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6, I build an ISO file.

    5. Using DVD Decrypter, I burn a DVD.

Here's the problem. The picture is absolutely beautiful on both my HDTVs. The sound is adequate (stereo) and in sync. The video is weird. It will look perfect for a few seconds and then, if there's a lot of movement, it's get will jerky. Not so much jerky, like stop action, but NOT smooth. Almost like it's missing frames. Any ideas? It looks exactly the same whether I actually burn a disc or just view the DVD files from the HD using PowerDVD.

BTW, I have viewed the original .avi files using VDM's preview features and the jerkiness appears to be present in the original .avi. Is that possible? What am I missing?

"Specifically HDTV .avi files that I've downloaded."

    Downloaded or captured?

Have you played the .AVI under Windows Media Player?

    1) Load the original .AVI video file into VirtualDubMOD

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

Sorry, I should have mentioned. It's a DL'd HDTV avi file that is XVID MPEG-4 encoded. It will not play as DL'd with anything I own. The only thing I can actually preview the video in is VirtualDubMod.

        Once again:

        1) Load the original .AVI video file into VirtualDubMOD

        2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

        3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

I don't have a screen shot on this box, so here it is. This is L&O:SVU. The same exact thing happens with LOST. The specs for both are almost identical.

Frame size, fps: 624x352 23.976 fps
          Length: 60326 frames (41:56:09)
          FourCC Code: FourCC (XVID)
          XVID MPEG-4 Codec
          Decompressor: XVID MPEG-4 Codec
          Number of key frames: 465
          Min/avg/max/total key frame size: 3248/20627/72438 (9368K)
          Min/avg/max/total delta frame size:
          1/5207/89443 (304425K)
Data rate: 1022 kbps (0.45% overhead)

The box this is being done on is BUILT:

          AMD 2800+
          NF7-S mobo
          1GB DDR OCZ Ram
          4 SATA HDs
          Samsung SH-W08A burner

Thanks for looking at this. Also, remember I said that when I open virtualDubMod and use "Preview Output from start" or "Preview VBR", the video is identical to what my finished DVD looks like.

The following was posted at another forum, regarding using TMPGEnc with a High Def "Lost" episode:

"Settings are: (not frame served from AVISynth)

frame rate conversion: set to do not change
            source type: progressive
            source aspect: 1:1
            video arrange method: full screen
            bottom field first

            size: 720x480
            16:9 display
            frame rate: 23.976"

            1) I (setarip) believe your problem may be arising from a framerate change to 29.970fps

            2) If you are able to convert this file with TMPGEnc, it means that you have all required codecs installed. Therefore, you should certainly be able to PLAY the original .AVI in Windows Media Player - and virtually any other player around

            3) The indicated resolution of the Xvid-compressed .AVI (624x352) seems far too low to be High Def...

I tried the settings suggested (I think I've tried them before) and DVD author will not allow me to create a NTSC DVD with a non standard frame rate.

I'm resigned to the fact tha the original avi is jerky. When I view it completely unprocessed in VDM, it the exact same jerkiness. It's too bad, the copies are coming out beautiful except for that problem.

That's all well and good, but I want to watch the DVD on my TV, not watch WMP on my computer.

Just to verify, I run the original DL'd .avi files in both WMP and PowerDVD and they both have audio with the pictures skewed horizontally across the screen, unviewable.

The SOLE purpose is to see if the .AVI plays properly - and you've now confirmed that it doesn't.

You should install the FFDShow filter and then use TMPGEnc to convert...
