Trouble opening regular (non-divx) .avi encoders.

    Hello,

I'm trying to convert a regular (non-divx) .AVI file to a DIVX file using Virtual Dub 1.4.9. When I tried to open my regular .AVI file, This error popped up:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'VP31' (Unknown)"

    Followed by:

"VirtuaDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

I tried opening up the same .AVI file in TMPEG and I got the same error (in different words).

Are there any FREE VFW codecs out there I can download? Is this the only way I can open a regualr .AVI file in an encoder?

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

    Rex.

No such thing as a regular AVI file exists, avi files can contain video encoded by a multitude of codec's, divx is one of them, but there is no standard avi video codec.

Then you need a VP31 decompressor.

You can get that from http://www.vp3.com/vp3/vfw/index.shtml
