Encoding time

Newbie question here...

Should encoding a two hour DVD to AVI take almost four hours?

I'm experimenting with both Dr.DivX and with Gordian Knot.

Depends on your system specs ie how fast it is. What settings you are using when you encode etc.

I'm running an Athelon 1400 with a gig of RAM. As far as the settings go, I just completed a run with Dr.DivX and accepted the defaults.

The movie was pre-processed with DVD Shrink to a standard DVDR. I ended up with a 1.1 gig avi which took two passes of two hours each to produce.

I guess what I'm wondering here is what is typical?

My goal is to encode a bunch of DVDs for a 'movie jukebox' to be run under a Linux Freevo system connected to a HDTV. But if I'm looking at a 4 hr time per movie for transcoding, well, that's a bunch 'o time

Can someone give me an average?

Windows XP, AMD XP 2000 CPU
Uncompressed DVD 7.091 Mb.
Compression set to 60%.
Source files from my hard disk
No deep analysis or enchanced functions. Both these are unchecked:



Approx: 45 minutes for the encoding phase.

You may have overlooked the fact that "jeffelkins" is referring to conversion to (MPEG-4) DivX-compressed .AVI format. Most of the software for that type of conversion is nowhere near as efficient as DVD Shrink or other similar DVD compression programs...

@jeff - I have an AMD1700 and only 512Mb of RAM. Although I haven't done that much DivX, the ones I have done in 2 passes have taken a couple of hours or more.

Given your processor, that sounds about OK.

Not to worry, you've made the identical post to a thread (It appears to be the correct one) in the DVD Shrink-specific sub-forum...

(It's extremely difficult to walk with one's tail between one's legs - and YOU certainly have no need to do that ;>})

So, other than DivX, are there other compression codecs I should consider for this project?

I'm looking at a target size of no more than a gig or so, with conversion time of less than two hours per movie.

Am I dreaming?
