Problems using VirtualDub 1.4

When using VirtualDub 1.4, after I put a value in to delay the audio and hit play on the source file and process the change and I try and play the processed output, I get a message saying that 'The source video stream uses a compression algorithm which is not combatible with AVI files. Direct stream copy cannot be used with this video'. What should I do??

Does this thread have anything to do with VHS footage that you tried to convert to a DVD-related structure that had audio sync issues? Forgive me for "Driving" this point home, but you started two different threads (the last one listed below [your 4th post is exactly the same wording as your initial one here-see link]) prior to this one that essentially covered the same (or similar) subject matter. PLEASE, in the future try to post your "Related" problems or progress in the INITIAL thread that you start so as not to cause confusion (and keep the already taxing job of organization by the forum moderators to a minimum). Ormonde, yes it is related, but no one has responded to that thread with an answer to my question. Does no response mean that the moderators are to busy or that they can not answer my question?? The reason that I kept posting a new thread to the same problem, was because lack of response from the moderators. If there is not an answer to my thread, I guess that's alright, but hanging in the wind leaves me confused and sitting on my hands. My original thread was not responded to in weeks, so I posted a new thread. Not trying to be negative or snippy, I just need clarity since this is my first experience with this forum.

One of the best virtues to have is "Patience". If I recall, in the last thread you're started (link listed in my last post), there were many responses (attempts) to answer your question. Sometimes, you may not receive a response for days (or longer), or one that might not be adequate to your liking. However, we will (always) try our best to resolve an issue - just give it some time (and experiment on your own too). Did you attempt my suggestion that was put forth in your last thread as follows? (See below)

Although the moderators at these forums do get fairly involved in responding to posts, that is not what they're here for. They are here to "moderate" - to see that proper decorum is maintained. Of course, they can and frequently do, share specific knowledge that they have.

The audio is probably in .mp2 format. Use an audio editor, such as GoldWave, to convert the auiostream to .WAV or .MP3 format...

Ormonde, Thanks for your reply. I did try Part 2 and that is where I am now and I am experiencing problems playing back the processed output from Virtualdub 1.4 and I am having problems moving forward and would appreciate help if you know why I am getting that error message from Virtualdub 1.4. Sorry if this wasn't clear from the previous thread.

Setarip, You say that 'I should convert my .mp2 file to a .wav or .mp3 file using goldwave', Will the goldwave program accept my file being that my .mp2 file is a video and audio file??

Before you output the file ("Save as AVI"), are you attempting to save as a "Compressed" output (DivX or XviD) or as an "Uncompressed" AVI? Outline the exact procedure that you have used thus far.

You should be able to simply "drag and drop" the file onto GoldWave. If acceptable, it should process the audiostream contained in the video file...

The steps I took were:

1. I Set a value into the 'delay audio track by' as detailed in Part 2:Fixing Audio Displacement. Hit 'OK'

2. Hit the 'play source file' button (2nd from the left). Let the video play all the way to the end. Then there were two copies of my video on the screen. I assume the one on the left was the source and the on on the right was the processed output.

3. Hit the 'play output' button (3rd from the left). I did this to see if the value I set in step one was correct. This is were the program gave me the error message.

Did I do something wrong??

When you did this, was the audio in or out of sync with the video?

The video still seemed slightly out of sync. Is the 2nd button from the left playing the source video with the 'audio delay' changes??

Then keep entering a value in the "Audio Skew Correction" window untill the video and audio are matched.

One step at a time!

I provided you with instructions simply intended to convert the audiostream portion of your video file to a format that VirtualDub can deal with. In order to do this, using GoldWave:

1) Drag and drop the file onto the main GoldWave window

2) Select "Save as" - and choose either .WAV or Mpeg Layer 3 (.MP3)

Setarip, I was able to open up my .mpg2 file in goldwave and I saved the file as a .wav file. What do I do with it now??

Ormonde, using the 'audio delay' values I was able to get the first 20-30 secs of the video sync'd however. as the file continued to play it went out of sync again. The video started going faster than the audio. Any suggestions??
