5 is an upgrade over for 4.12. Consider it something like 4.13, only that the upgrade is very much bigger compared to previous ones. Hence, the 'takeover' of 4.12, though I would be more inclined to call it upgrade.

Using the same settings in divx4 and 5 will produce nearly identical results, so the standard version of divx5, does not really deserve the name divx5 (one of the divx developers has agreed with me on this), the pro version adds some nice features which should help quality, but they also require alot more cpu power for playback.
Anyway the divx5 format like divx3 and 4 are based on mpeg4, there are limits to what can be achived with this or any other format for that matter. So don't expect any miracles.
i have tested the pro version a little bit, and get that results when using little higher bitrates, its just great (but have to test a full procedure yet)
5 std does add stuff that 4.12 does not have like the Psychovisual modeling and is further optimized for P4 and Athlon.
The xXx trailer looks pretty good at 9mb in size, even when stretched to 1024x768 full screen. I aint played it with 5 (don't like it) yet though only with 4, so I may be missing some of the extra stuff that 5 could do.
