you can try renaming the file if it has funny characters in it, then try and load it again, otherwise that second file is likely bad

"Yea it burnt fine and played good on my pc but didn't play on my dvd player.."

you need to find media your dvd player likes then

Ok I re-tried everything from the start. I used TMPGenc to convert the file to .mpg fine, used TMPGenc Author to author the files ok, and then burnt the video_ts files to a DVD-R. The DVD disk play's fine on my pc but it won't play in my standalone. I did notice however there was a divx sign in the bottom left hand part of the screen when I was watching it on my pc, does that have anything to do with it?

-All of the original files are in Divx5.0 Video format, after I converted one of them it now is in Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder format.

you have to find a media it likes, videohelp.com has media suggestions under "dvd players"

i think that logo looks good, but if you want to remove it

                  from afterdawn.com

"After encoding from AVI, there is a DivX logo on playback
This can happen when you use CCE SP to encode a DivX file. If you have the DivX codec installed, then everytime that you play a file you should also see this logo. You can disable this logo if you wish in the DivX options but I would suggest you use ffdshow instead. Download and install ffdshow and you will notice playback much better with it installed. Also on your encoding, there should now be no more DivX logo."

this will likely be from what columbo stated as being media compatibility. check at the site he stated.

yea now I'm pretty sure it's the media becasue when I shrunk and burnt training day using sony dvd-r, it worked like a charm. Now I was using Maxwell and followed all instructions from encoding to authoring to burning and they still didn't work, i'm off to buy sony again and I'll keep you posted...

well it's not a media issue becasue I have used 3 different brands. this is getting really frustrating. does it matter that the original avi file is a dvd rip?

I didn't read the whole thread (sorry) but are you sure your standalone player is capable of playing DivX files?

I think it is because I encoded and burnt the same files using WINAVI and they played in my standalone but the quality was crap...When i used TMPGenc and TMPGenc Author to convert my standalone wouldnt even recognise the disk.

I just noticed on my standalone there is a sticker that says DVD-R video playback and I have been trying Dvd+R, could that be the problem?

i'd say it's a lead that needs a follow up
