Why is dvd file so big when converted from divx?

I am a bit new to converting divx to dvd. I have tried WinDVD Creator and Roxio. I have an entire season of Rescue Me on Divx and when I try to create a dvd, I can only fit 2 episodes per dvd. I thought that you could pack more on there. I dont want to lose quality, but dont the DVDs that you buy in a store contain more than 2 episodes per DVD? Thanks for the help.

    divx ~ = mpeg 4

    now dvd = mpeg 2

    higher is better 4>2

    episodes are 45 min? 2 x 45 min 1 1/2 hours
    disks cost 30 cents

you can compress and save 15 cents, what in the heck for?

Thanks for the info. How do they fit more than 2 episodes on the store bought season DVDs? Or do they have 2 each disk? Thanks again.

the compression used to make Mpeg 2 is variable,
all related to bitrate(how much quality versus time)
Now then we have dual layer store bought which are almost
twice as big as single layer blanks.

it really depends on your standards i think too. i have numerous tv shows on dvd and put 5, 45 min episodes on one dvd for example. they still come out quite nice. the higher bitrate you choose, the larger the file size and the more disc space required. i spent some time experimenting with my software and created various bitrates/file sizes to get a happy balance of space conservation and quality

            frugal columbo!
surely you wouldn't compress a columbo show that much?
of course with mono sound it wouldn't be so bad.
