i finally found out why my divx files are so big. this is cos i keep the resolution the same as i want quality.

i wanted 2 know what is the best resolution, where quality will still be good when enlarged to full screen.

I allready tryied many resolutions up to 800x... and I think that it dosn't make sense to use resolutions higher than 640x... for DivX/MPEG4 because even the highest bitrate looks a bit blocky. I use 3 different resolutions:

1) a width of 640 for all 16:9- and 2.35:1-movies.
2) a width of 512 for all 4:3-movies with no black borders
3) a width of 400 or lower for all internet-movies with low bitrate

That resolutions can be easily resized by any player to the standard-video-resolutions (640x480, 800x800, 1024x768, ...) by multiplication with 2. Many old graphic-cards, bad players or slow computers have problems when resizing by other factors. So don't use other resolutions (like 720x... or 480x...) which might not look good on standard resolutions.

You should resize the video to the right aspect ratio so the player dosn't need to resize it to display it on a computer-screen.

You can also try 'tailoring' your video resolution to suit the bitrate you are using. The lower your bitrate, the more beneficial it is to have a lower screen resolution.

I forgot to mention one other kind of resolution: 512*576 and 384*576 (for PAL-DVDs with an original resolution of 720*576). The reduced width is also used in SVCDs because pixels in a horicontal line are more similar than pixels in a vertical line. That's because of the technic of the capture-cards and tv.

If you take a 720*576-DVD with 16:9-format and you resize it to be real 16:9 you will get 1024*576. Then you decrease the width by factor 2 and you get 512*576 (maybe you can cut off the black borders). Then you only need a player that can stretch the width by factor 2. 384*576 is the same for 4:3-DVDs. It's an interesting format if you use high bitrates because the resizing filter wont smooth the video as much as if you resize to 640*...!
