problem with avi files again!!

My computer is strange!! It doesn't like Xvid. I downloaded the vlc player zip package to be able to play avi files on my computer. Whenever i try to install codecs, it just wont permit the installation. VLC player helped me play the avi files on my computer. it's good because it didn't need any installation. However, lately, I'm having trouble playing avi files again. I don't know what went wrong. Suddenly, it's only sound that I hear playing over a frozen screen. I'm still using vlc player. Does anyone know what could be the solution for this? Could there be another way I could play avi files on my computer without installing codecs? I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks.

i use the xvid codec myself...what errors is it giving you and is this your home PC?

Yep, this is my home pc. Well, when I try to install the xvid on my computer, it would stop installation and say

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\xvidvfw.dll
An Error occured while trying to create the file in the destination directory. The directory or file cannot be created."

this also happens when I try installing ffdshow.

I'd boot up in safe mode, browse to the system folder and rename the problem files and put them in a safe place. Then try the installation again.

You probably have something loaded in memory that's using the xvid dll which is why you can't install anything. Booting in safe mode should keep that from happening.

I'd get rid of the DOS based OS. Update to win2k or XP.
xvidvfw.dll shouldn't effect playback though since that should happen via dshow (xvid.ax).
