Different file sizes with Fairuse & Virtual Dub Mod

Hi there,

does anyone have the same problem as me? I'm quite fond of using VirtualDubMod for encoding because it gives me the right resolution and also the ability to incryse the ac3 volume. When i start encoding with Xvid at lets say 1700 bits the file size gets a whole lot larger than when i do a encoding with Fairuse 2. Now i love Fairuse 2 but it's not flexible enough for me, so not quite the option i want to use.. but the difference between the two programs can sometimes run up to 800 MB (on a 2 hour movie). F.I. a 2 hour movie is 2.6 Gb with VirtualDubMod and only 1.8 Gb with Fairuse.

I hope there is someone out there that can help me with this issue..

When FU gives you 1.8GB's, you have the output size set to what? For me XviD has always given spot on size prediction. That said if the first pass is smaller than the second you may get oversized encodes with default settings or undersized if you have the quants capped to 2. I don't encode at a larger 2nd pass than the first though.

Okay basically what i do is follow this manual:

Resolution 720 x 304
fps 25

Codec:
Video: Xvid
Audio: Uncompressed 6ch AC3 448 kbps

Calculation bitrate:
720 x 304 x 25 x .28 = 1532160 / 1024 = 1500

now on the second pass... do i first have to use single pas and than load the first pass movie in Virtual Dub Mod again for the second pass? Because now i'm using second pass immediately (which could be the problem?)

I haven't found any setting for the CBR/VBR, so i guess that's not an option with xvid?

Now i also just did a test on my laptop and guess... it was 2.3 Gb so 300 mb smaller than on my normal pc... (i used highest priority on the laptop).

I hope someone can help me out because i'm running in circles here...

in this situation, VBR = 2 pass. the first pass analyses the video and outputs a 'stats' file. the second pass reads the stats file and encodes the video.

no wonder your file sizes are screwed up.

for the first pass use "2 pass - 1st pass". then encode again using same settings, but this time change to "2 pass - second pass". most apps will automate the process

(i used highest priority on the laptop).

that will not acheive anything other than maybe crashing the system. leave priority at idle, or low.

for simple instructions check out the digital digest or doom9 guides for xvid encoding, you need to do some reading. or better yet use AutoGK for encoding, its about as close to a 1-click backup as you can get

i'll try that... So if i'm correct, i open the avi file and get all the settings done and than the compression goes to 2pass - 1st pass. After it's done i don't have to load any file, everything stays the same and i only have to select 2pass - 2nd pass (making sure the stats file is pointing in the right direction) and than i save it?

After the 1st pass, do i get an avi file that i need to work with or should i just delete it?

By default you get an empty avi since discard 1st pass is the default setting.

That guide suggests VFAPI and resizing via VDub. I would not recommend either. Use AVISynth instead or stick with the automated apps like FU Wizard, AutoGK, StaxRip, etc.
