Converting WMV to AVI - Size Problems

    Hi there

I have a number of files in WMV format and want to convert these to AVI format. I am using a program iVideoMax but when I do the conversion it triples in size. Can anyone advise how I can convert a WMV file to AVI and retain the same quality without increasing the size too much? And for free preferably! I am probably doing something stupid but am not sure what. I am choosing XVID of DIVX conversion codecs and am keeping 23.97 frame rate.

    Any ideas!

    Many thanks

    Rik

Size = bitrate * runtime. So if you want a smaller file, you need to decrease the bitrate or runtime. The only way to retain the same quality and similar filesize is to remux to wmv to avi rather than re-encode. The only way to keep the same quality whilst converting is to use a lossless codec which will mean much larger filesizes.

COnverting WMV to AVI - Size Problems

      Hi Celtic Druid

Thanks for the response. Can you advise - what is a remux and how do I do one?

      Many thanks

Basically means, take the streams from the wmv container and remux to an avi container. Should be possible with VirtualDub MPEG-2.

I am interested in converting WMV files to either mpeg or avi. From what I see above, you get a much larger file. Why is this? Is windows compression that much better?

Is there anyway to convert these files to another format?
