Problems Converting XVid to Mpeg2 to burn to DVD

I've got some videos that I'd like to burn to DVD, but the problem is that they're XVid and in a widescreen format and if I just use an authoring program, like Sonic DVDit!, Roxio DVD Builder, or Ulead DVD Movie Factory, it will squeeze the widescreen into 4:3 format and it will look squeezed on a 4:3 TV and on the computer.

I figured I could just go in and add bars using TMPGEnc and adding borders to the top and bottom, but evey time I encode the video comes out choppy. I've tried encoding to .m2v, mpeg1 and mpeg2, but every one of them come out choppy.

The specs on the first clip I'm trying to convert is as follows:
    Duration - 42min 22sec
    XVid
    Bitrate - 1014 kb/s
    fps - 23.976
    Resolution - 608x336
    Audio - mp3, 130 kb/s, (65/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.92, 48000 Hz

    Any suggestions?

in TMPGEnc Plus you are not setting the framrate correctly is why it comes out choppy.. the file you wish to convert is a snap. you don't have to do anything with the audio. follow this guide, just ignore the audio conversion at the beginning as it is describes how to handle AC3 streams. you can go to step 2. never choppy playback using this method, --guaranteed.

make sure to raise directshow like it says at the start!

BTW, if you want to preserve the ORIGINAL widescreen aspect ratio--just follow the guide using "keep aspect ratio 2" (you'll see it)

For what it's worth, any avi's I have that are 23.97 fps, I encode them that way, and use DGpulldown to convert it to 29.97. Basically I encode them the same way I do when I have a pal to ntsc conversion.

Reason being I would always get jerky playback when adding pulldown in TMPGenc. But if I encode the movie as is, and add the pulldown later, it's smooth as butter.

The only problem is DVD author will tell you the GOP is too long, and will create a non-standard dvd. I just click "ignore" and author it anyway. I have (probably) the cheapest dvd player you can buy, too, and all my dvd's play just fine. But your mileage may vary.

So if you're still getting choppy playback, at least on 23.97 avi's, you might try this method.

Columbo, love the show by the way, I followed your guide and TMPGEnc says the file couldn't be created after it finishes with the inverse telecine process.

Nevermind, I figured out what I was doing wrong there. I'll let you know how it turns out when it's done encoding.

Looks like it worked! The only problem I see is that the first couple seconds of video are kind of jumpy, but then it evens out and seems to run pretty smoothly and stays in sync with the audio.

                Thanks for your help.

that could be a problem with the original file itself (not noticeable on playback). you can edit it out if you want too. i'm happy to hear of your success
