What is the best automatic converting program, DVD->Divx/Xvid?

I have tried Dr Divx before but had decent results but not what I had from going through the 6-8 step process of rippins, ripping audio, gordian knot (I forget all the programs, it's been years..)

Anyway, is there a good program out there that puts out good quality Divx/Xvid/AVI files?

Also, can't files with a .divx extension be renamed to .avi? Does that mean they are actually AVI files?

The DivX Media Format is backwards compatible (basically avi+hacks), so renaming works because any hacked features (chapters, menus, etc.) just get ignored. Probably better to leave the extension or remux, removing the non avi compatible features.

I use StaxRip, used Auto Gordian Knot before that. Both are fairly simple to use.
