Old DIVX codec being use by DIVX converter

After days of searching through forums having thought I'd seen the answer somewhere I'm unable to locate it.

I'm uisng the DIVx converter after buying the 6.2 create bundle. After encoiding a video and checking with GSPOT it reports the avi is encoded using DIVX 5 and not 6.

Any suggestions how to correct this would be very welcome.

DivX 6 still uses the fourCC DX50. No reason to change since DivX 6 is still just an ASP MPEG-4 video codec, same as DivX 5 was. Plus changing the fourCC would break compatibility.

Check the divx userdata tag. Should have the real version info.

From what you are saying is Gspot effectively seeing the two codecs as one ?

the fourCC determines which codec is used for playback, and in most cases identifies which was used to encode. rest assured if you're using divx 6.2 that's what your video is encoded to.

In GSpot it is on the left around the middle... Where it says User Data/MetaData.

And u will find the exact version info about ur encoding codec if u open ur avi in Virtualdub.

I have checked in the left-hand box and it does say DIVX 5.0 and not 6

Also just managed to get autognot working after the 'fast writestream' error and it also encodes in divx 5. Should it make a difference that this new pc was preloaded with a divx version ??

For 5.x you should see something like "DivX503b1031p". DivX is a VfW codec, installing a newer version would overwrite the vidc.dx50 registry entry, so the old one should no longer work.

Should point out that I haven't actually checked the divx string myself in a DivX6 file. I just assume that they updated it.

More info,

In Gspot I see in the userdata I see [USER] DivX503b1977p and under Video section is see DX50/divx / DivX 5.0.

Version 6.2.5 is definitely installed as I see it under programs, divx, divx codec, readme.txt.

Is it worth removing any codecs via the cotrol panel or via gspot ?

Possible that DivX503b1977p means 6.2.5. I don't know how DXN work it out.
DivX503b1031p would have been 5.x though, so that is 1031-->1977 which is quite a jump. Maybe you should ask DivX?

vitualdub reports under videostream that the decompressor is divx 6.2.5

does this then mean that the avi was encoded in 6.2.5 ?

Yes, I think. I encoded a video with 6.2.5 and get the exact information as u get in GSpot and Virtualdub.

All it means is that it is being decoded by DivX 6.2.5. On my system it would have XviD as the decoder.

Since in this case it is the same system that it was encoded with, it basically does mean that it was encoded with 6.2.5 though since that is the VfW codec registered.
