slow conversion speed

when i try to convert and burn a file to dvd, the conversion speed has slowed right down. i use convertxtodvd by vso. it used to take around 1 hour to convert and burn a file to dvd, at around 39-41 fps. now it takes around 2-2 1/2 hours at around 25 fps. it starts off as fast as usual but then the frame rate drops progressively down to as low as 20 fps.
I've tested other programs like nero, which i have aswell, and the same story there to.
I have no idea what the problem is. a few weeks ago it was running fine, then the other day i tried to burn a dvd and this happened. also my CPU is maxin out at 100% during the process but i coudn't say if this is normal.

could someone please help!
by the way the files i'm converting are avi's, but i havn't tried any others yet!

yeah. dma is on according to the device manager.

maybe you've changed some settings in your app for say a more thorough motion search or your files have different specs, eg res, length, codec, etc. i'd say the latter is more likely.

encoding times increase with specs like resolution, length/framerate and complexity of the codec (performance really only takes a hit for high res avc though). different files will encode at different rates

the files in question are xvid avi's. i'm pretty sure nothing has changed in the app. the same thing happened a while ago, but that was resolved (low ram). but it is following the same behaviour as then, by starting off at 40 fps or even up to 45 fps, and then dropping down to 20 fps over a time of around 10 mins.

10 minutes is about right for overheating to kick in

that could be about right as the weather is hot (35-38'c). do you mean the comp it's self or the burner, because convertxtodvd encodes first and then burns when finished.

probably the computer, open the case and point a fan into it to test

u are a furry genious! opened her up and directed a fan at it for an hour untill completly chilled. then i ran convertxtodvd with the file i have been previously trying and it has stayed at 38-39 fps which will do the movie in an hour. i was also running a downloading client and an accellerator.
