Encoding Movies To Smaller Size

Hi im a n00b when it comes to encoding movies I just bought a creative zen vison portable media player that I hook right up to the tv which is great but I have one problem a lot of the movies i download are 2cds.

Its weird that i can have a movie that is on 1 cd and the movie is 1hr 30 mins long and another movie is same length but is twice the size.

All the movies I get are usally encoded in xvid 1.1.2 final used gspot to get that info.What i want to know is how to take a movie that is 2 cds reencode it into 1 cd and stay with good quality which program works the best and could you supply me with a link somewhere to will explain how
