How long should it take

I brought DivX Pro quite a while back and now I have come to use the program it seems to takes hours to convert a 0.99GB file to about 700MB. I thought maybe a 4GB file would take a long time but not 0.99GB, is there any way to speed it up?

I have 1GB Ram and a 1.8ghz CPU (Celeron M)

ram is fine but an entry level laptop low power use cpu lacks the muscle to do
heavy duty jobs like video conversions

older intel cpu's had a lame L2 that really slowed such work
