xvid + ogg

is there a way to mux ogg audio with xvid video in the gknot encoder?
if so do you have a url or info on were i could find a guide to do this.
I was provided the information once before, but it is lost.

No, GKnot does not support xvid or ogg internally, if you want to use xvid, gknot should only be used to create the avs file. And possebly to normalize the logfile between passes, but this is not needed anymore.

www.doom9.org has guides for all that you could possible want to do, but there is no one guide that cover xvid + ogg, so you will have to grab a little from the xvid guide and some from the ogg vorbis guides.

Nope, if you want something special you have to do it manually. Ofcause you will also learn alot more that way, so it's not all bad.

2 pass xvid

so another questioin that i've been unable to answer with doom9.org is how exaclty does xvid 2 pass encoding work with gknot. I'm assuming it is similar to the way you would do divx 2 pass in flask, but in flask i never get the initial log file to reload into encoder. i've been searching the xvid site, but still no luck

By default xvid will store it's firstpass log in the file video.stats in the root folder of the drive that holds your output file. (at least that appear to be the case with my build, but it's several weeks old, so they might have changed that).

You should be able to set this somewhere in the encoder properties.

i'm going to try it asap
trying all this on my trusty 233mhz p2 takes a little longer than usual.
I have found that most computers playback out of sync when encoded on any fps other than 25fps
how do i know that my encodes on the dvd2avi are in 25 fps
i think i might have missed the setting. going to go back through the guides to see if i can find it.
I want to finish this experiment to get xvid/ogg
I think it would be worth the try. is xvid truely the golden boy of codecs? I hear alot of good things that it is for the advance bit encoding with more options to tweak. my only experiences show room for improvement. it could be i'm just an ediot and do not now how to tweak it.

NO, there is no magic, I think the primary attraction with xvid is that it offers a lot more tweaking options.

i'm assuming you mean better quality for lower bitrate tweaks.
i would expect that to be the only reason to switch from the spyware divx. trying to move from wm8 due to tired of sporting m$oft in my encodes. divx and spyware scares me to. need an open source codec that does not use hacker software.

then if there is no apparent increase of quality what is the tweak good for. why would it be a better choice than divx. adware free is the only saling point if there is no noticable quality advantage.

Some of the features makes the ripping process more convinient, this is the case with the inbuild, begining end credits handling, and bitrate calculation.

Then there is curve compression stuf which may or may not give you a better bitrate distribution. Ofcause if you really want to you can do something simmilar with divx5 using divx4log, but I strongly advice against this (primarily because we don't know exactly how divx5 use the log file to decide the quality level of individual frames)

And because the xvid rate control mechanism works a lot like nandub, xvid might be more precise on filesize, but since the introduction of divx5, this is pretty much, a convinience issue.

And there is the fact that you can use min quantizer=1, which will give you slightly better quality at much higher bitrates(higher than divx5 can do).
