    xvid in gknot

i used smartripper to remove the vob demuxed
loaded the result into dvd2avi for a 2 pass encode with xvid
do you reload the result directly into dvd2avi for the 2nd pass or does it do it all automatic for you. does anybody out there know this? Do you know anything about size ratio ac3 to ogg?
i'm trying to max the xvid size and minimize the ogg audio to smallest possible without lossing quality.

No, nothing happens automatically, first do the first pass, then do the second pass, just like you would do with divx4/5. But make sure to use '2-pass 2nd pass int' for the second pass, not '2-pass 2nd pass ext'. But why don't you just follow one of the guides, untill you get the hang of things, and then start experimenting.

There will always be some loss of quality, how much is acceptable, is always a matter of taste.

      crash

my attempt with dvd2avi processed up until the end and then crashed. will try again tonight with another system.
on the first pass encode what does the file store as?
.* what extention does the first encode have?
i'm going to try it on another system to. hopefully that was not the reason for the crash. but with my other questions basically it should work even on a slow system, but take longer.

The first pass does not produce any files that you need worry about. It will creat a short and invalid avi file that must not be used for anything. And it will create the stats file that is used by the second pass.

          freeze

if the system freezes after completion of the 1 pass
what do you use to reload the stats to process the 2nd pass
i'm going to revamp my entire processing center on my system
to try to create a perfectly tweaked xvid or divx 2pass encode muxed with ogg. and also revamped for the crash issue. i think this might provide with the best for quality and size.

How can I make this more clear.

You are not supposed to load the 1st pass log file. The codec does this.

By default xvid will store it's firstpass log in the file video.stats in the root folder of the drive that holds your output file.

So as long as you put the second pass avi file on the same drive as the first pass avi file, the codec will know where to find the log file.

              i see

my system has yet to complete a 2 pass encode
              everything that i try freezes
going to attempt a new encode this weekend with the new settings.
i was always believing that the system need it to be reloaded to complete the encode since my system freezes apon every attempt.

System lockups should not be caused by incurrect settings, it must be a general stability issue.

                  2 pass

i tried a 2 pass encode with xvid
you are correct the quality is not any better than wm8 or divx
and halfway through the movie the frames freeze on one frame while the audio plays perfect. seems like when i fast forwarded the movie it threw the hole thing out of wack.
will try again tonight, but I believe xvid is very fragile. do you have any idea what will make this encode more stabile? i think i know why system was hanging during encode before. i was trying to encode 1st pass and then after i would go in and change the encode to 2nd pass and try to reprocess on the same encode. I tried on my faster pc just the 2 pass int only encode and it produced the above problem i'm having, but the good thing the system freeze is cured. stupid me thinking 2 pass encode meant to literally encode the video 2 physical times instead of just chosing the 2 pass encode option and let it do it all in the background.
                  ********************************************
halfway through the movie the frames freeze on one frame while the audio plays perfect
                  *******************************************
i'm almost possitive this can be cured by encoder options. possibly key frames, i thought they have already come out with bframes but i guess only lframes. this sucks. do you think that the frames could produce this result?
will be trying anything i know for the next 3 days.
again thanks for the help. I wish i could pay back you and all the other awsome helpers that i've met on this and other forums

No kidding, the developers are adding new stuff, and trying to fix old bugs on a daily basis. And updates are usually completly untested when released.

No, sorry I have only done a few tests with xvid, and have not experienced any stability issues, so I don't have a clue what might be giving you problems.

Probably an encoder error, but you might try running the file through divfix, or change the fourcc code to divx, this way the divx4/5 codec will be used for playing the file. You should be able to find a fourcc changer in the download section at www.divx-digest.com

For me, XviD has been exceptionally stable, with less screwy unpredictable behaviour than DivX (Except haven't used 5.02 much yet, but 5.00 gave me fits). I use it either from VirtualDub or TMPEGenc. Sometimes the quality isn't what I want (when is it ever?), but it's never shown any buggy behavior to me. That's my experience: Your milage may vary.

                        I'm using:

                        10:10:30, May 13 2002
                        Core Version 2.1

                        Just some suggestions:

What are you using to play the files back? I always use the old WMP 6.4. When you move the seek bar to skip ahead in the file, the picture may be out of sync or frozen or screwed up until it hits another keyframe, which could be 10 seconds or so. So let it play and it should eventually get back in sync.

You might go to Advanced Options and hit the "Debug" tab and check "Force Optimizations" and turn everything off, or at least make sure they're set appropriately.

I always encode at 320x240 or 640x480, I've have had problems when I use other resolutions and I'm not sure if it's an aspect-ratio or a divide by 4/8/16/32/64 issue.

If your computer locks up/crashes when you run the CPU at 100% for extended periods (Like comressing a huge zip file, or encoding a video, or playing a graphics intensive game) Then it could be a heat issue with your CPU, and you might need a better cooler on it. I actually had this problem with an old K6-2, and whenever I'd make a huge RAR (ZIP) file, the system would either crash, lockup, or the RAR file would be corrupt. (Which had me testing my Hard Drive, ARRRRGH!)

Finally: Is it possible that the source files that you're encoding are somehow corrupt? I've had VirtualDub choke and die a horrible screaming death when it gets a bad file.

                        Good luck!
