There are 2 ways:
1.Putting the .avi and .srt files in the SAME folder and naming them EXACTLY the same.If you burn this folder as Data-DVD or Data-CD,you can play the avi with sub in DivX certified standalone players.
2.Hard coding the .srt into the avi, i.e., re-encoding the avi WITH the .srt so that the subtitle becomes an integral part of the video.Now the video will ALWAYS play with the subtitle.This can be achieved with Virtualdub(and Vobsub/Textsub filter).
I do it the first way;easier,avoids re-encoding(thus avoiding any quality loss) and gives the option to switch off the subtitle.But,you need a compatible standalone player to play this file.
