What does give the best quality ?

Well fizzer I guess now you've got me hooked!! I'm trying AviDemux 2.4.
I used to mainly use it to clean up .avi files for stand-alone players. I'm running it on some Vob files now in "Turbo Mode" so let's see if the output is any good.

Hmmmm, after playing around with AviDemux my impressions. For 1 pass conversions to xvid I think StaxRip is tough to beat AFA video quality if you use the 80% quality mode. OTOH, AviDemux seems to have more audio options that work, including Copy(no reencoding.) But I did happen to convert a borderline VOB set using AviDemux and no matter what I did, including 2 pass mode, it was unwatchable. The big advantage I see to StaxRip is autocropping mode. If you have a letterbox source it can give you an .avi file in anamorphic 16:9 without you doing any calculations or manual cropping. The big mystery for me with StaxRip is still how to process audio other than to mp3.

Inconclusive to be sure.
