Movie too large for DVD

I need some help. I'm a newbie to this. I have an avi xvid movie file that is 698MB. I'm trying to convert it to DVD. I'm using Mainconcept MPEG Encoder to convert. The estimated file size is 6153MB. I want to fit this movie file on a 4.7GB DVD. I don't know if I'm using the right program to convert. If someone could help me I would appreciate it. I need a step by step process.

There are many transcoders and re-encoders out there. Some we are not allowed to discuss and you can google them.

Others like DVD Rebuilder, Nero Recode and DVD2One might fit your needs.

Can't you just set your encoder to the right size? It might take a bit rate calculator to determine the right bit rate for the size you want, but then you'll only be encoding the video once.
