Nero Cannot Edit, Create Chapters, or Preview, PLEASE help!

I have Nero v. 8.2.8.0 (and tried v. 8.3.2.1 prior to that), which includes NeroVision 5. Ever since a reinstallation I did a couple of months ago, I can no longer edit videos, create chapters, or preview the video in NeroVision. I receive no error messages until I export to file. I simply cannot access the "play" button, or the "create chapters" buttons, etc. The buttons are grayed out. This problem is happening with ALL my videos, including ones I edited/burned before the reinstallation with no problem.

I have Windows Vista, and all my videos are either avi or mpeg files. I have tried installing different codecs (although I truly dont know what they are, or how to determine which ones I need). All my uninstallations have been done using the Nero cleantool. I also received a new licence/patent # from Nero in case that was the problem. I have no problem watching the videos on Gom Player or even Nero Showtime. So I don't know why the preview won't load.

I have searched all the forums, and spent hours trying to fix this problem, but I cannot find the answer. I am not very computer savvy, but I can make my way around, so if you can help me, I would really appreciate it.

eliconi I don't know if this still applies because the last Nero I used was 6. But with that version I used to put a blank CD in the drive and wait for the drive to stop reacting before opening Nero. The reason was, if any bad disc or anything else caused Nero to hang and I had to kill it, then it was hosed. I had to use the Registry Cleaner tool they provide after uninstalling it, then do a fresh install. You might check their site and see if such an uninstall cleaner tool still exists or use a 3rd party registry cleaner after uninstalling. Then reinstall.

The thing I liked best about Nero was creating VCD menus easily. But I don't make VCDs anymore. Anything else it does that I know of can be done with freeware or stuff available for a nominal cost. It takes some learning curve to use a few tools for things Nero did for you but usually the results are worth it.
