i want to convert my animations to avi format, but i dont know why the avi format has different types of mpeg and divx/xvid, what's the differences between them ? when and how do i convert swf to avi (mpeg) or avi (divx/xvid) ?

well. it is really a serious question, but i've never think about the differences between them, it is not important because most of the conversion tool has the function to let you choose avi (mpeg) or avi (divx/xvid) before the swf to avi conversion start and most of the avi players can playback both. maybe you can try iwisoft swf to avi converter which works well for me. good luck !

Audio Video Interleave (AVI) is a special case of Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF). AVI is defined by Microsoft. The .avi file format is the most common format for audio and video data on a computer.
Audio content or video content that is compressed with a wide variety of codecs can be stored in an .avi file and played in Windows Media Player, if the appropriate codecs are installed on the computer. The video in AVI can be compressed with some different codecs. AVI(DivX/xvid) means that the video in this AVI file is compressed with DivX/xvid Codec. And AVI(MPEG) means the video in this AVI file is compressed with mpeg standard.
Divx is a video codec created by DivX, Inc., which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality.
DivX uses lossy MPEG-4 compression, where quality is balanced against file size for utility.
DivX has been a center of controversy because of its use in the replication and distribution of copyrighted DVDs. Many newer "DivX Certified" DVD players are able to play DivX encoded movies.
XviD is the name of a popular new video codec being developed as an open source project by volunteer programmers from all over the world. The format was created to offer a free alternative to other commercial video codecs, and despite being open source its quality and efficiency has made it one of the most popular video codecs online. While XviD still isn't as widely used as the DivX® codec, playback of XviD movies is usually supported in new DVD players nowadays.
The XviD codec makes it possible to compress a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on a single CD (might require 2 CDs depending on the length of the movie), while still maintaining the original image quality. Despite the fact that XviD movies offer higher quality video at smaller file sizes they take less time to encode than MPEG-2 due to the incredible compression technology. The video is usually combined with MP3 or AC3 audio to enable both high quality video and audio. These factors and the fact that the codec is distributed for free has contributed to the success of the format.
When you install the XviD codec it basically provides your system with specific instructions how to compress and decompress video in the XviD format. Once you've installed the XviD codec on your system you will be able to play XviD videos using Windows Media Player or any other XviD-enabled player.
MPEG stands for the Motion Picture Experts Group, part of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), charged with creating and publishing standards for various areas of technology, respectively. MPEG standards address audio and video formats used online, in television broadcasts, and in DVD media.
A number of MPEG standards are in current use, and more are sure to follow. Some well-known standards are explained briefly below.
MPEG-1: This first set of standards was developed for audio and video compression. MPEG-1 Layer 3 is a codec within these standards, known simply as MP3, or the popular audio compression format for music.
The video format of MPEG-1 was used to store movies on CDs, known as Video CD, or VCD. Quality is equal to that of a VHS tape, and compatibility playback on CD/DVD players is high. One drawback of MPEG-1 is that it only supports progressive footage, verses the inclusion of interlaced. These terms relate to the way a picture paints itself across a screen. Progressive monitors (including progressive TVs) paint a picture ‘from top to bottom’ progressively in a single, sequential pass. Interlaced displays paint every other line, then fill in the odd lines in a two-pass process.
MPEG-2: This standard improved on MPEG-1 by including the ability to encode interlaced pictures. It is widely used for digital cable, satellite and over the air digital signals. This format is also prevalent for movies distributed on DVD. Television receivers, DVD players and television stations typically incorporate the MPEG-2 standard.
MPEG-2 also contains two container formats: the Transport Stream and Program Stream. These relate to the way digital broadcasts are transmitted and formatted to media, respectively.
MPEG-3: The intention was to make this standard compatible with high-definition TV (HDTV), but this became unnecessary when MPEG-2 extensions expanded that standard's ability to encompass HDTV. At that time, MPEG-3 was abandoned.
MPEG-4: Borrowing from MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, the MPEG-4 standard extends functionality of audio/video compression by improving format flexibility. MPEG-4 supports 3-D rendered objects, as well as incorporating the copyright protection scheme known as Digital Rights Management (DRM). MPEG-4 can be used for broadcast television, online streaming media, applications such as videophone, and distribution on digital media.
The MPEG-4 standard is developed in “parts†associated with some well-known codecs. For example, DivX, Xvid, Nero Digital and Quicktime6™ are a few codecs that use MPEG-4 part 2. A different version of Nero Digital (AVC), and Quicktime (version 7) use MPEG-4 part 10, as does the x264 codec. Blu-ray discs and some types of HD DVDs also use this flavor of MPEG-4.
MPEG continues to develop (non-sequentially numbered) standards, such as MPEG-7 and MPEG-21, dedicated to multimedia content. For more information see MPEG’s official website.
