    NTSC DVD ripping concerns...

I am having trouble ripping Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The Movie to DivX.

The DVD rip (using SmartRipper) worked perfectly, but during the encoding (through FlaskMPEG) the audio goes out of sync tothe video.

I originally thought this may have had something to do with the fact that it is an NTSC disc and therefor the frame rate would be different. With this in mind, I changed the framerate on the rip to 29.97fps as opposed to the PAL standard of 25fps. I set this ripping. When it finished, sure enough the audio was still out of sync.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I can rip this disc? If so, they would be gratefully received.

As far as I know, NTSC videos have either 23.98 or 29.97 fps, NOT 25 fps (This is PAL). Try using whatever fps value Flask gives you (it chooses the right one automatically). Otherwise, try using 23.98.

Flask gave me the value of 29.97, so I used that and still the end product was out of sync.

I completed the process twice (one with the wrong fps and one with the correct value) and both attempts failed.

      Anymore ideas anyone?

Try using 23.97 fps. Otherwise, send the finished file (with the audio) into Virtualdub. Set both the video and audio tabs to Direct Stream Copy, and under the audio tab, adjust the Interleaving settings accordingly (Experiment around). Then File -> Save as AVI. and give a name to the new file. Hope this helps.

Well - this is a turn up for the books...

I did what you said. I encoded at 23.97 (or whatever it was) and it was still out of sync. I tried playing around with the interleaving settings as well to no avail.

What kinda settings should I be looking at? I'll keep having a play though...

              Oh poo!

I got the film so that just over half of it is in sync...but the rest is hideously out - damn!

I think this might be one that can't be done...or at elast, can't be done by me that sucks!

Nothing is impossible,,,if the force is with you

it looks like you've tried everything apart from trying to use gordianknot which gives the best result with the fewest and even no flaws. Also the quality is a lot better.

Try it and tell us how it goes

                    stretched video

sounds like you are encoding into stretched video.
fps are not exactly set at 29.97 or 25 fps
try this link in nicky's pages
audio sync avi info syncing plugin

this collection of articles is pouring with divx info.
                    hope this helps

i encode all ntsc i believe
and with flask i get sync only at 25fps and gknot is just another story.

i would encourage you to pursue your readings with gknot.
gknot divx 5.0.2 for video then headache the ogg audio on 2 cd's makes the best quality i've found so far. the only way to fly.

GordianKnot? what a load of poo-poo!

It didn't work - in fact, not only that it has managed to completly mess up ALL my programs and ALL my codecs!!

Sorry for that rant - but now I have it off my chest, I have decided that is it actually impossible, although I have one more theory. When I get my codecs and everything sorted out, I am going to try using FlaskMPEG and VirtualDub again, but this time I am going to put a -66ms delay on the audio. I have come up with this figure based on the ac3 file that GK created for the audio of Mystery Science Theater. Heck, anything is worth a try...<sigh> I just wish it wasn't that time consuming!

Anyway, I shall let you all know what happens when it finishes...laters dudes!
