Convert .m2ts or .mkv to AviHD?

I'm just curious if there are any freeware to convert .m2ts or .mkv to .avi with greater than standard DVD resolution or HD? Or can I use a tool that would usually convert to standard .avi and just use a resizing filter?

Since I have a set top box that can play 720P and higher res .avi files I'd like to see how they look compared to say .mkv.

Thanks for the reply. In the meantime I've found Quick AVI Creator will work for me. It will produce an .avi with the same res as the source. Or if I want to convert to play on a standard .divx enabled DVD player I can just size down with a filter. Nice freeware.

Thanks for the reply. I've gotten away from a desire to do this. Seems if a DVD player can play avi/divx at higher res than SD it can also play .mkv. If I size down the res I pretty much go to DVD9 now. If the source is excellent the DVD produced is high quality with one pass CBR. I don't have much patience waiting for 4 hour encodes. I'd rather burn a DVD9 and get it over with.

The HD stuff I play on a WD set top box.
