quality?

im using flask verson 0.594 to rip,for some reason im not getting a good quality rip

I used low motion codec and 100% quality,862 for bitrate on a 88min film.640x480 res.filesize was 640mb

Its ok i suppose but how do i get highest quality rip,id like to keep size below 800mb

640*480 is probably a bit too much at 862kbps. And of course useing a two pass encoding method will also be beneficial, in flask you can do this with divx5, or you could go for a more advanced encoding method with GordianKnot , which allows you to do two pass encoding with divx3.11+nandub or divx5+virtualdub.

gknot is the way and personally i think you should upgrade to
divx5.0.2 if you are going to do it due to the high quality 2cd rips almost perfect.

Yeah I also suggest that you use GordianKnot. It's the best=)

If you want to use it with DivX 3.11 (the best so far) you can read my guide. It would work out fine. If you want to use divx 5 go to http://gknot.doom9.org

You will get a lot better quality.

Im currently 53% thru first pass on gknot

Ive tried ripping using gknot now 0.26 and divX 5
The problem is I end up with a avi file around 350 mb!
Teh first pass only takes 1h 7 mins and second takes 2h somehthing,surely somethign is wrong?
I followed uncas guide exactly,I seem to end up with a low quality rip,is it because im choosing sharp bicubic and not nuetral?
Ive given up on 0.26 and trying the 0.23 guide using 4 now.
BTW somehow gknow couldnt open my log files when i used 0.26
Can anyone give me tips on achieveing a high quality rip using either version,file size isnt a issue,around 800mb is fine.

With GKnot or nandub in two-pass-mode and a bitrate higher than 800kbps the quality can't be too bad. Here are some very simple instructions

- reduce the resolutin to 640x... or 512x...
- deinterlace the video if it is interlaced
- set keyframerate to 10sec or higher

I used 448by 336 as res,
I didnt enable Fast Deinterlacing tho..mebbe thats the reason why?source is interlaced PAL aswelldidnt metnion that in uncas writeup

Im tryign the rip in gknot 0.23 and divX 4,after running compres check i got 38% with red bg so seeming i was using 448*336 res, only option i had was to increase the size to 800mb which gave me 44%,after save and encoding again gknot had picked bilinear filter instead of nuetral,so I left it at that,currently ripping it and hoping I wont end up with a nother low quality rip
I did enable fast deinterlacing this time tho.

Hmm forgot to ask this
Virtual dub doesnt show me the actual frames when ripping,is this normal? as Flask shows the avi whilst ripping.
Also the log file,Do i create 1 or does Gknot do that?

Yes it's perfectly normal for virtualdub, not to show the video as it's beeing converted, it's because GKnot tells vdub to use fast recompression, in which case the video stays in the yuv colorspace durring the conversion.

And of couse you are not supposed to create any log files, GKnot will do this itself.

Could you post your _GKnot.log file, from your first attempt, that failed ?.

My first completed rip in 0.23 and its perfect,well nearly,its 760mb long
quality is uber nice with the billinear filter,res is 448*336
Now my only query is,whats the diffrence in the bicubic filters?
Any chance soemone could explain?

The differnce bettwen the resizing filters is how sharp the picture will be after resizing. Bilinear will smooth the picture a little bit, then follows smooth, neutral and sharp bicubic. Smooth pictures will compress better while sharp pictures will result in higher filesize. If you use a low bitrate a smoothed picture may result in better quality with less blocks. IMHO (sharp) bicubic is only usefull for 2-cd-ripps (bitrate 1200kbbs and higher).
