I know this is going to sound insane to some people, but I was able to get copies of Star Wars (the original trilogy, special editions) VHS-rips to Divx.
However, the subtitles during the non-english scenes are gone, because the widescreen bars got trimmed to save space. Logical during most movies -- except when there are subtitles.
I know what they are saying ... but how in the world do I manually overlay the subtitles onto the still frames, then recompile the AVI? I don't mind the work to do it -- I just need to know which program can do what I am trying to do.
