    AVI to DivX

I've tried following Nicky's guide "AVI to DivX", which can be found at http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/avi-2-divx.htm, wanting to convert the AVI files I make using my Pinnacle PCTV Pro TV card into DivX.

When I tried opening one of these AVI files, VirtualDub 1.4 gave me this error message:

    Virtual Dub Error

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'PIM1' (uknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

    [OK]

Any help would be much appreciated. I have little experience with DivX and have no idea how I can fix this problem.

PIM1 is a codec that should be installed with the Pinnacle-drivers. Maybe it's on the driver-cd or you can download it at pinnacles website.

Searching through my computer for "pim1", I found a file, at my Pinnacle directory in Program Files, named pim1compress.AX

I presume this is the codec I need?

I guess this also means that VirtualDub isn't registering this codec, somehow? I was a bit surprised win I installed VirtualDub, that the program was only in a zip file and was ready-to-use, not needing to be installed.

I also have VirtualDub and Pinnacle installed one two different HDs, but I don't know if that matters any. Should VirtualDub be placed anywhere specific? Do I need to copy the codecs into the VirtualDub directory?

It could be that the PIM1 codec does not come with a vfw decoder, I don't know, because I don't have a pinnacle card.

If you can play the file in wmp or any other avi file player, you should be able to get the video into virtualdub, by using an avisynth script, using the command directshowsource("Filename")

        Check this guide

you can skip to the section called Creating an AVS File.

And use you avi file instead of the vob file show in the guide.

back at school, we learned from trial and error. We have a pinacle dv500 or something like that. Well the case is that its more expensive than the 75 GB SCSI hard drive they have.
Anyway, we also used to get weird codec requests when we tried to convert in other programs. We ended up in just using uncompressed AVI. Even though it took soooooo much space that it was unbelievable. The school purchased Divx 5 pro bc me and some friends showed our teacher that it did an amazing job. What we do is use premiere to convert to uncompressed avi and then everyone uses the program of their choice to convert to Divx

          I use VDub
