Archive format and organization suggestions?
I'm a newbie at digital video editing and I’d like to know which file format I should archive my video clips in. Also, any advice on how best to organize them would be appreciated.
I have numerous short video clips that I've recorded using a 3rd generation Flip UltraHD pocket camera. The Flip records video in an .mp4 container with H.264/ACC compression and a resolution of 1280x760 at 60fps. Most of these are 1 to 3 minute videos of my newborn twins. The videos are named VID0000x.mp4 from the camera which isn’t very helpful for determining what the video is of, so what I'd like to do is trim each of the videos and organize them into separate folders based on subject matter (i.e. Twins, Mike, or Alex). The files will be named based on how old the boys were when the video was shot (e.g. 22w_Mike_first_swim). Does this seem like a reasonable organization method? Eventually, I'll compile a lot of the clips into movies in DVD format to be played on a TV, but I'll also be occasionally uploading short movies to Facebook or YouTube.
I've been using VideoPad for video editing and I'm happy with the interface and the functions it offers, plus it edits H.264 with no problems. But, if you know of software that you’d think would be better suited for me, please let me know. I don’t mind paying for the software, but it needs to be relatively inexpensive (nothing more than $100).
Over the next few years I’m sure I will have lots and lots of videos, so I’d like to reduce file sizes where I can, but I want to maintain quality. Any suggestions on what format I should store these clips in? Also, what parameters should I be using (frame rate, bit rate, etc)?
