.avi problems

I've been downloading a lot of movies lately, and none of them work on my computer. When i try to play them, Windows Media Player says "Error Downloading Codec". I went and downloaded GDiVX player and it only played the sound, not the picture. These are all .avi files and i am at a loss of what to do. I would appreciate any help. thank you.

get yourself the tsunami filterpack 396 (full) and isntall it via custom routine with all default options

afterwards you should have all common codecs installed
