    Upscallind dvd avi files!!!

    Hi all,

I have a few questions. i have read a lot about this were people are saying u can upscale a dvd avi file to get a much better image than a standard dvd pic.

I am trying to do this on my pc going from dvi d to hdmi i have a 7000series gfx card witch can play hdmi files ok.

i have used a few bits of software to do this just wounded if there is any thing eles are other people experiences that have worked very well.

Also i have got a few hd video files as well that i view just want to be able to get the best pic posiable for my 43inch hd lcd.

    What do u guys recommend

what exact card are you using?

MediaInfo is a convenient unified display of the most relevant technical and tag data for video and audio files

AFAIK you can't take a crap avi with low bitrate and make it better no matter what it's played on

the hd avi's should play fine on that video card and appropriate cpu/ram

use mediainfo to get a handle on bitrate

Talk about converting to DVDs, encoding in MPEG-2 for DVD compliance, as well as DVD playback and DVD region-free discussions

maybe admin can give us a clue about video card's output?

You can upscale AVI/DVD using ffdshow's resize filter (perhaps anonymez can help out with the exact settings?), but as Chewy said, it's the GIGO principle: garbage-in, garbage-out. The output will only be as good as your input. With a well encoded AVI file or DVD, then upscaling will look quite good on a big screen, otherwise you just end up making the artifacts look more prominent.

As for output, make sure your desktop resolution is as close as possible to the native resolution of your TV (may not always be possible, eg. if your screen has a native res of 1024x768 and it only supports 720p/1080i through the input). The refresh rate also is important (to ensure smoothness of the video, and to try and not use 3:2 pull-down for film content, which adds jitter), and if possible try to set it to a multiple of the framerate of your video (eg. 23.976 FPS => set to 72 Hz, if you TV supports this mode, 25 FPS => 50, 75 or 100 Hz, and 29.97 FPS => 60 Hz).

                  That helps a bit thanks.

So if i get what ur saying i should set my 42" lcd hd tv to the highest resolution it can support to get the best pic on my dvd's is that right or not.

Basically you should find out the native resolution of your 42" TV (check the manual), and then set your Windows desktop resolution to match that (and the refresh rates, etc...). And then, you should set up the ffdshow resize options to also match this resolution.
