Has he run a HijackThis chewy? He's long on problems, but short on info, I'm afraid.

These shutdowns could be heat related. Blue screens are more drivers, non?

Time for the hose, I fear.

yeah...a transcoding/encoding error. good point...

i just opened the system up there...a little bit dusty, but not anything too bad. i mean, i couldn't write my name in the dust, but it is there. it was cleaned in mid november when i had my computer serviced...

okay, here are the temps:

fan 1: o rpms
fan 2: 2377 rpms
temp 1: 35c
temp 2: 52c
hd0: 37c
hd1: 37c

cpu usage: between 0.1 and 1.5%.
is that normal???

okay, when you said "What happened when you tried to use DVD Shrink on a normal DVD?", did you mean what happened when i tried to back a dvd (bought from a shop)? okay, when i used shrink to back up, it gets to a stage where there is about 20ish minutes left of encoding/imageburning, and then *puff*, bluescreen or restart. in fact, even with nero (which is a pos), it gets to the same "time remaining" stage: the low twenty minute stage...odd...

could you recommend any other programmes which i could use to create my own dvds?

It's not the software. Run your speedfan and do a DVD Shrink run. Backup to ISO image file (if you get that far).

Every 2 minutes, switch to the speedfan window and see what goes. CPU usage will be 100%. I wanna know what happens to the temps, esp that of the CPU (which currently looks OK).

I've seen worse HijackThis's. As a thought, take the lexmark drivers out. Just stop Lexbces.exe and LexPPS.exe and see what goes. Probably nothing beneficial will happen, but let's eliminate them as a potential problem source.

i've thus far refrained from posting in this thread, not because i didn't have any advice to give, but because its the type of advice nobody wants to hear:

20 mins of iso image burning to go. temps as follows:

temp1: 35 (up from 34)
temp2: 57 (up from 54) ***edit***NOW UP TO 58C.
hd0: 37 (same)
hd0: 39
hd1: 26 (it varies between 26 and 37) up and down...

it manages to ALWAYS burn the image without a hitch. it's going from image to dvd burning which is the issue...should i run a 'rip and burn' to dvd session???

just a question about formatting: what's to say i won't have the same problems all over again? is it likely that i'll be at this VERY position in a few weeks?

muzz - please - let us understand you. you are not burning now right? you are encoding with DVD Shrink?

Making an image doesn't burn anything. Burning is when there is a blank in the drive and you are writing the files from the HD to the DVD blank. You tend to be confusing with your attempts at terminology.

So what are you doing now? Encoding with DVD Shrink? What is the CPU usage?

cpu usage is between 100% and 91%...

heh...sorry. i won't use the term 'burn' incorrectly...image creation. i am 63% through an image creation with dvdshrink, with about 11 minutes left of image creation...i use 'burn' too often. sorry...

You're not even creating the image yet. DVD Shrink is doing its stuff in what it calls encoding.

Watch those temps, every few minutes.

LOL - every minute is OK and you are nowhere near overheating. If this creates the image OK, I want you to try to burn it with ImgBurn. That will show you CAN do a complete process.

Then, as corny suggested, do a memtest - www.memtest86.com
