    Help with HP Computer!

Hey, my mom's computer got spyware so I did what I could. I used that HP Recovery thing, and it did nothing. So, I used my XP CD to wipe the drive. The problem: In doing so, I deleted the HP Recovery program that I need to restore Windows (obviously I did not activate Windows since I can't).

I called HP, but it's out of warranty so they won't help me. I was just wondering what I should do.

Does anyone have an HP Pavilion PC that could find that HP Recovery program and ZIP it for me?

By law every manufacturer is supposed to supply you with cd's or the means to reinstall your copy of windows, many do it different ways.
In your case I would simply say my computer is off warranty and the hard drive crashed, what are you going to charge me for a set of recovery cd's for
this computer. They took the shortcut and the fee sould be nominal.

Maybe someone with a Pavilion could do this and make me an ISO? Providing it's not illegal that is.

12$ is cheap, you should have made the set of cd's before this happened,
or asked for help before erasing her computer.

            But I didn't

I am talking on HP Chat now (stupid phone people saying I have to pay for support) but I doubt that will get anywhere.

I guess I have to buy the CD. This is what they said (I removed my last name for security purposes.):

Pat K: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Desktops.
My name is Pat. How may I assist you today?
Danny: Hello, my previous session was closed
Danny: my computer is not under warranty, but I cannot access the recovery tool
Pat K: Hello Danny. I will be glad to assist you.
Danny: I just wanted to know if there was a way to download the recovery program
Pat K: Let me check the previous chat session and get back to you.
              Danny: OK
Pat K: No, it is not available for download. You have to purchase the recovery cd's.
Danny: I have a CD burner however, does the recovery have to come from my PC?
Danny: or can I make one from a friend's computer
Pat K: Yes, the recovery has to be from your Pc. It cannot be burned from your friends computer.
              Danny: Is it system-specific>?
              Pat K: Yes, system specific.
Danny: Is there a way to download an ISO that I can burn?
              Pat K: Unfortunately, no.
Danny: I know you can buy them but it saves time and money if there was a way to download a burnable CD
Danny: not even the HP Recovery program that came with the computer can be downloaded?
Pat K: No, it is not available. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Danny: Now, is the recovery drive supposed to be empty?
              Pat K: No.
Danny: in Windows Explorer there is just one folder that has nothing in it, but yet the drive is full.
Danny: When reformatting my hard drive, I only wiped the C drive, and did not touch the recovery one.
Pat K: Rightclick on the drive and choose properties. Let me know the used space and free space information.
              Danny: e
Danny: sorry, 4.96 GB used and 854 MB free
              Danny: total capacity 5.79 GB
Pat K: Danny, you mentioned that you did a format. Did you install the operating system from the retail cd ?
              Danny: Yes
Danny: however this CD cannot be used again, as it is already in use on another PC
Danny: I used it just to format, so I am stuck with this OS that cannot be activated
Danny: Plus, I would like the HP programs as well.
Pat K: Danny, I am sorry. The recovery files are in the D: drive. However, it is not possible to use them. Some programs related to recovery are stored in C: drive. When you formatted the c: drive, these files were deleted.
Danny: What is the solution then, buying a recovery CD?
              Pat K: Yes Danny.
Danny: I noticed those run for $12, is that all shipping costs?
Pat K: No, the shipping and handling cost are extra. The total cost comes to around $25.
Danny: How fast do they typically take to ship?
Pat K: They take 3-4 business days.
Danny: So what should I do in the meantime?
Pat K: I understand your situation. You have any issues in using the operating system installed in the computer now ?
Danny: Also, with the recovery CD, will it restore the Windows XP Home Edition that does not need to be activated?
Danny: well, it keeps asking about activation, but I can't as I already activated it on another PC.
Danny: I can use it for a few days until the CD comes I guess, but it does not have any software or drivers/
Pat K: Danny, I will help you locate the drivers. Is that Okay?
Danny: I got the sound driver, but that is all.
Danny: The main concern is installing all my programs only to have them be erased again.
Pat K: Yes, a recovery will restore the computer to factory settings wiping all programs installed by you.
Danny: And it will restore drivers?
Pat K: Yes, drivers and pre-bundled softwares.
Danny: Alright, I guess I will order a CD then. But just a suggestion for the future, provide the recovery software available to download, so that people can immediately get it, and not have to wait for a CD to arrive.
Pat K: I understand Danny. Do you have the Recovery CD purchase information ?
              Danny: No I don't.
Pat K: Let me provide it to you.
              Danny: Thanks
Pat K: Give me a few moments.
Pat K: The computer is a refurbished a700n, correct ?
              Danny: Yes.
Pat K: Thank you. I will get back to you.
Pat K: Thank you for your patience.
Pat K: The Cd is available from HP Parts Store. Here is the information :

Now this is going to sound cheap but I know it works because I actually did it. I recently upgraded my Hard drive to a bigger one, so I needed the discs. I called up support and told them my comp crashed and I replaced the hard drive and needed the replacment discs. They told me the same as you that I'm out of warranty and that I'd have to pay for it. I told them that I couldnt afford that because I just got my computer back from an HP recommended supplier and they charged me 200.00 and made my computer worse. They sent the discs out to me for free. (most of the story is true. I did send out my comp to get serviced and it did get messed up by them)
                  Chizzmo

                  Cheers

Not only would I use the CD Key that should be printed on a label attached to the computers case.... but the activation screen that comes up offers a way to call Microsoft on the phone and activate that way. Since the computer was purchased through HP the license for the software is legit. MS shouldn't have any issues with giving you an over-the-phone activation.

You don't need to activate it - it's OEM.
My mom paid for the CDs so I don't care that much LOL

I have called MS to get an original Windows CD, I explained that I never recevied one thru HP for my laptop, just their stupid recovery CD, and MS shipped out one free of charge.
