How to make pictures into Icons?

Hello all,
I am hoping that someone here knows how to do this.
I know how to change the appearance of a folder to an icon that is in my Windows operating system. Which I found in the system 32 folder in the hidden windows files.

However I am wondering how do you turn a small picture into a icon and then how do you get it into the right folder so that they will show up in the icons choices?


Any help would be wonderful.

Here is a picture of what I am talking about and in the background is a open folder with the pictures that I would like to turn into icons to change my folder appearance with.

Best I can see of what you are asking in the customize menu you are displaying, click on choose picture. Then browse for the picture you want and then apply. You could create just a special folder for this for speed in the future

Please try Icon Sushi, a completely free tool, which you can import any .bmp, .psd, .png,...files or images in sizes of 16x16, 32x32, or 48x48 created by Photoshop or any image editing tools, and then save them into .icon files

download & install xnview, open up any image you wish, resize if needed, file-->save as-->icon (*.ico)

I've been using Liquid Icon and IconEdit for a while. But dunno how they shape up to ben's and anon's recommendations.

photofiltre should be able to save as ICO as well

I just downloaded Xnview. Great program. It can handle a lot of different formats.
Icon Sushi can't open jpg.
They are both free.

Thanks guys for all the replies.

I will give them a try, Originally I just thought I could click that browse and then choose the pictures but that didnt work it had to be in some kind of special file format. So I need to get then into a .ICO file, that makes sence.

Does anyone know how to create a desktop icon for Media Player Classic? I keep having to go through Winzip.

when unzipped i right click exe file>"create shortcut". then i cut and paste that sucker on the desktop.

If you use start / search then type in what you want to create a shortcut for. When search is done, right click on exe then a window will popup telling you it cannot create a shortcut here would you like it on your desktop, say yes. Or go to program files / find your exe / right click / create shotcut / minimize / drag & drop it on to your desktop.

Or just right click the file, choose send to desktop (create shortcut)
