    Seagate SATA HD Setup problems...

    Working with Abit KV7-V mainboard

    Installed Seagate SATA HD 250 GB. When I get to xp setup;

"press f6 to install SCSI/Raid driver" - when I press f6, it does not respond but continues with the set up.

then I get "to specify additional SCSI adaptors-press S" I do that and it says to "insert manufacture hardware support disc in drive A & press enter"

...I do that & get "the file txtsetup.oem is not found on the disc" ---but the file is there, I can see it when I explore the disc.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    long story shortened...

Went to Seagates' site & downloaded "discwizard for windows", which is supposed to be the easy/correct way to set the drive up.

Now, when I run discwizard, I can select the size of the partition that I want to create for "C", press next; it then tells me that it is formatting the drive.

There is a progress box present, which never "progresses", & I get an hourglass on the screen... I left the pc sit for a good hour & still no progress.

Please help me before I throw the pc down the cellar steps!!!

    katz,
    1. disconnect all other drives
    2. find the best floppy you can and format it
    3. load the newest drivers from the web site

    this has to be perfect!

forget about discwizard, bad idea, designed for older mobos that don't support the drive, did you set the jumper right for sata 1 or 2?

      what jumper do you mean?

there are 2 sata connectors on the board, I have it in sata 1...

The other drives were still connected, I will disconnect.

new sata 2 hard drives come with jumpers enabling or disabling sata 2

The other drives were still connected, I will disconnect
that's how i deleted 120 gigs of data on a 160 gig hard drive

          I can see that happening...

new sata 2 hard drives come with jumpers enabling or disabling sata 2
this drive does not have that, but it does have jumper settings for 150/3.0 - I have it jumpered to 150, which is my mainboard capability.

load the newest drivers from the web site
just so we're on the same page here - you mean from the mainboard website, right?

If so, that is what I did, but I will try again (with the other drives disconnected.)

It is after I get the "press f6" & then try to run the floppy that I keep getting "the file txtsetup.oem is not found on the disc".

I am normally a very patient pc tech guy, but this one is starting to get to me

bad floppy drive or bad floppy disk is often the cause

I usually take a new one and format it, or find a high quality used one

Could I burn the file to a CD & let it try install from there, or won't that work?

                    Chew,

                    my floppy does not look like that image;

Abit says to copy the files from the drvdisk SATA download over to the floppy...

oh... I copied the entire drvdisk folder to the floppy; still, it should install from that, shouldn't it?

my floppy looks like this - right or wrong?

Use a Windows XP CD which has built in SP2, I used the same for my XP installation and it doesnt require a separate driver. Otherwise as Chewy said, you need to have a slipstream CD or proper drivers inthe floppy.

                        katz,
who made your motherboard? Abit or Seagate?
I downloaded the file from abit and it extracted into a 1.22MB folder.
Only done this a 100 times with 30-40 mobos last few years, I almost always use raid chips.
what I don't know is what chip controls that raid driver?

Sil3112 Sil3114 Intel VIA Installation Disk

                        from here

and make floppy, make sure it set to boot to scuzzi/raid? and etc

                          tech -
Use a Windows XP CD which has built in SP2
I don't have access to a CD like that; I have an older vers. & a separate sp2 disc.

Chew - Well, I see my problem now; I thought I was supposed to download the VIA SATA Driver Revision v4.30g. I was putting the wrong files on the floppy. I have now downloaded the correct file & will do as you instructed today & see how it goes.

Question though; I still don't understand why this is correct; Sil3112 Sil3114 Intel VIA Installation Disk

& this is not what I want...VIA SATA Driver Revision v4.30g

                          Do I install that later?

Thanks so much for you time - I was lost on this!

that's abit all in one sata driver for all their mobos that they put out during that timeframe, you could only copy the via folder and txtsetupoem and probably get by, but?

by the way open txtsetup with notepad

the bigger file is for raid stripes/mirrors after the OS is installed, I have had more trouble with them than they are worth.
