Well - Initial test not so good. Printed disc using the "middle" quality setting...not draft mode, but not high quality either. I used a shiny TY CDR. The printing came out okay, looked pretty good, in fact. The epson print CD software is a breeze to use.

After waiting approx. 8 hrs., I handled the disc & the ink was not dry, resulting in smudge.

I don't know if waiting longer would allow it to dry enough or not. I am going to put the disc away & check it after a week.

Bummer! I was hoping this would work, 'cause I have a lot if these shiny discs too!

Guess I will purchase prinitable media from now on, if I decide to go down this road of printing directly on the discs.

    Loco may be right!
EDIT: I can tell you that it won't work on a plain ole shiney top disc though.
@ night; I purchased mine at sams - they had the best price I could find, even shopping online.

The main reason that I purchased this printer is the cost of the ink tank are much cheaper (it seems) than most others. I also like the individual ink tank setup, too.

Just replace one color when it runs out, not throw away an all-in-one cartridge!

I had been looking at the cd/dvd printing option for awhile too, it is a nice extra feature to have. Several reviews that I have read online & on other forums rate this model very high.

It's like using a magic marker instead of a Sharpie...

If you have a staples you can turn in your empty carts for a $3 voucher. The replacement carts can be purchased online much cheaper than what they can be bought at Sam's for. Sam's = $65 for a set, abacus = $27 plus shipping.

        Great link, loco, thanks!

Will probably be purchasing from them! Thought I saw on the forums awhile ago where these carts were going for something like $3 ea., but I might be mistaken...

Officemax in my area does a deal like that - or they swap you out for a package of print paper.

I get that at work...not that I condone jobsite theft or anything.

If ya wanna get creative, you could try a new approach.
Go to the hobby store and look in the spray paint section. Find a white primer type coating that you could "LIGHTLY" coat your disks with first. I would think one can would coat all those disks with ease.
The ink needs something to absorb and bond with, the disks don;t allow that. The printable verson have that coating applied for you.

Your R220 will print on standard, sliver, white CD/DVD disks. Set the options for highest quality, and the ink setting for the least amount of ink if the ink won't dry quickly.

Also, www.printonadime for all the ink tanks, clear see-thru ink tanks you can refill while in the printer, and they have automatic resetable chips.

Also, there is a software program out, that when you ink pad is full you can reset it, so the printer won't stop working. You can also re-route the drain hose to the outside of your printer to recycle the black ink.

                Hi ed,

Your R220 will print on standard, sliver, white CD/DVD disks. Set the options for highest quality, and the ink setting for the least amount of ink if the ink won't dry quickly.
I'll give that a try; after allowing the disc to dry for approx. 16 hrs., I could still wipe the ink off with a tissue, & you can't even tell the disc had been printed!

I will try your suggestions, though.

                Also -
I have been coating these discs the day after the printing with some type of clear sealant and they look great and are water/smear proof.
Do you seal your CD/DVDr prints?

And - Is this the software program you are referring to?http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml.

When the ink pad is full and the printer shuts down, software program to reset the ink pad so the printer will continue to work. SSC Service Utility use it instead of the Epson R220 Service Utility

You can also re-route the drain hose to the outside of your printer to recycle the black ink.
                Nice idea!

Many thanks for your ideas/suggestions! I know night will be happy after he reads your posts!

                cheers, katz

Yes. My R220 will print on plain discs, but a bit faint and takes time to dry, better than nothing, but not as good as a printable disc does pasty pictures as well, but lettering in black better. Best of luck

                    Ok guys,

Now I've come across a 2nd issue w/ this printer. I am printing flyers w/ text & some graphics. (not real intensive work) In "draft" mode, the print is way too light, even if I set all the sliders to max in the advanced options.

If I go with the next higher (than the draft setting), the printer prints at a snail's pace! I am used to the performance of my HP...

Is it normal for this printer to be this slow? Older models were slow, but I thought this newer one would perform faster than this! I can't say that I've experienced this issue recently with printing, & I have used a lot of printers over the years.

Maybe this one's not built for speed...

                    regards, katz

I am no expert with dvd / cd printing but I do know a lot about printing in general.

If the disc isnt made for printing the top even though may be just white many not aborb the ink onto the top of the disc which could spill ink into the printer which could destroy the printer.

I personally would stay with a dvd made for printing I have seen many of my friends trash good printers fron ink spilling inside them.

I dont know for sure if that would happen or not but it could.

Unfortunantly, I need them to be color prints. They don't have to be "the best" quality, so that is why I am trying to do fast printing. They are advertising flyers, & the business logos, etc., need to be in color.

I have been trying numerous settings, & I don't believe this is going to be a speed machine...

Guess I will use the epson for "quality" printing, & the hp for my fast work.

If you are looking for speed in large quanity in ink jets wont be what you need. Laser printer with toner are geared for speed.
                            Cheaper in quantity too.

If you can get away with black and white it is cheaper to go to Kinko's for large quantites. But that is only cheap if only black toner is used. They charge a lot for the color.

However if you are going to be doing a lot of printing like that you may want to consider a color copier. HP makes a few color copiers that print out fast the quality isnt has high as a printer off the computer, but you will increase your speed a lot and Most HP cartridges can be refilled. To cut ink costs down.

The one I have was about $300.00 5 years ago I know they are around $60.00 to $100.00 now. I used My HP color copier which also scanned. For flyer back when I did Mary Kay and Tupperware.

I havent used it in a while now though much faster then my epson printer but my epson printer can do a much higher quality. Not needed for flyers though.
